This will be a databse file system . .
. . based on the SQL Server "Yukon" technology. Yes, it should be completely impossible for any but a .NET server to support Longhorn clients.
Microsoft has also stated that all their software (and obviously everyone elses) will need a complete rewrite to support the Longhorn filesystem. This will eliminate a huge number of competing software titles the publishers of which can't afford the port to Longhorn.
Anyone who has bought into any part of .NET will find themselves on a forced march to Longhorn and elimination of all non-Microsoft software and operating systems.
There will be talk of rebellion, as with License 6, but it will be pretty much all talk, something to do while reaching for the wallet.
Enough large companies will have based their entire supply chain and customer relations software on .NET technology, they will apply extreme pressure to both their customers and vendors to toe the Microsoft line.
To save themselves, software publishers should be porting to and intensively pushing adoption of Linux for all it's worth NOW. This will not happen, because the primary qualifications to head a software company are the spine of a jellyfish, the business sense of a sea cucumber, no balls, and a lust for crumbs from Microsoft's table.

???????????????
What do you mean Predatory... sure they were found guilty of SOMETHING... but *NOT* being Predatory...
I am glad to see you Open Source Serfs NOT understanding these 2 rules:
1. Microsoft is never wrong, and invents everything new. 2. If you think differently, see rule #1.

Predatory? This is innovation! Progress!
Yeah, right, whatever.
Anyhow, I have much faith in the types of people who created samba to manage to provide external access. Reverse engineering is time consuming but not impossible.
Also, if MS is really serious about playing in the enterprise, they are going to have to play nice with the other platforms. Because no company bigger than 10 people can get the purchasing act together to guarantee consistent IT architecture.
Its just never ever going to happen. There are telcos out there still running 40 year old software.
I am out of the country for the duration of the Bush administration. Please leave a message and I'll get back to you when democracy returns.

What about other governments?
I think we'll see a lot more deploying Linux.

I trust this is an important key. Crucial, even?
When your own government has proven repeatedly.. that corruption is rife from Resident thru Judiciary; when you observe repeatedly, utterly illogical processes being panic-danced into Statute-form - decisions utterly counter to all intelligence, and ominous far beyond technical concerns, and --
You Are a Computing Professional, sorta like what you do and - have the balls to fight for continuing options for doing such work: what do you do in such an ominous predicament?
A) Take immediate next steps to work for a remaining sane government (and/or its citizens) via web-commute + periodic flights?
B) Prepare to move there, perhaps for reasons other than mere professional preference (?)
C) Change professions while you have time to retrain for an escape from such an impending and guaranteed oppressive change?
Is there a D) ?

Note that (as I recently had cause to discover) if you work for another country's government, you are likely disqualified from receiving a US Passport. So...plan on forfeiting your citizenship should you decide to take this option...

Errm???
That's news to me (since I have done such and still own a passport). Care to elucidate? (if you'd like to do this in private, you have my e-mail address...).

Look at the Passport Application document...
...found [link|http://usembassy.state.gov/posts/ks1/wwwfds82.pdf|here]. Page 4. Under "Acts and Conditions": [...]accepted or performed the duties of any office, post, or employment under the government of a foreign state[...] I apparently will have to sit corrected in that it automatically disqualifies you from receiving a US passport. But you must declare that you have done so, and explain what you did.
