New merging logical drives in W2K
I've got some users who need to use Virtual PC (VMWare clone) and as a part of this I have upgraded them from 98 to 2000. The problem is the drives on the original 98 setup were partitioned into a system drive and a data drive. I now need to merge these into a single drive. Disk administrator help is telling me this only works if all the drives affected are considered 'dynamic'. Any one done this before and can point me to some better info than the built in help?

Urk.

Whichever way you dice it, this is going to be messy.

The flat-out easiest way of doing this is to use partitionmagic or similar to resize the volumes.

If you convert the disk to a dynamic disk, you'll have unlimited partitions and the disk will not be readable by any other operating system, no sirree. Apart from Linux, but that's just a viral cancer spreading across the face of computing, so that doesn't count.

I don't think, however, that you can merge volumes. You may be able to resize a volume down (i.e. the data volume) and then expand the system volume into the free space.

New Back up, repartition, restore
I think it's probably the safest way to ensure you don't lose all your stuff.

New Solved
Found a solution with the added benefit of having a backup. Used an Image software package (ImageBlaster) to make a image of the sytem on our utility server and then simply blasted it back down telling it to use all physical space on the target. Result-- NTFS single drive with all original apps and config and a emergency image for restores if needed.
