New Not that simple
Sure, a lot of jobs have moved south. Net capital flow has been out of Mexico and into the US, though... look who owns all those factories in the maquilladora.

What you're really seeing there is part of the net flow of money from the middle class (who held those aforementioned jobs, but are now too expensive for the ol' profit margin) to the business elites (who still own the means of production involved, but are paying a lot less for the labour to get the things made).

You don't think the devaluation of the peso was an accident, do you?

New Well, if there was one controlling force, we would know it.
I suspect there are many forces at play. Devaluation of the peso is certainly motivation for the illegals. Yes, and it makes it easier for Walmart and Home Depot to buy up Mexican stores and for IBM to get their PCs assembled. It should also make Mexican tomatoes more attractively priced in the US.

New Yeah, after all, farm workers are much better paid than
factory workers. Ask all the people who used to make cars in the US if they're better off or not.

It doesn't take a "single source". It only takes a confluence of interests and power.
