New Re: On that note.... Lookey Here ALL (Note to Norm)
His brother sent me a note - the reply bounced.

That hospital is known for its mental health center. I assume he was admitted one way or the other.

All we need (and should) do is let him know we are concerned.

Mental Health... would be my bet... maybe for other wounds too...

New DRL, forgive me for being cynical...
but would you check with the hospital to see if he is indeed admitted? Hospitals generally have no problem in letting you know.

Personally, I have sent email from other folks email accounts (but in my case with explanation).

New I already did
It's a confidential unit and they cannot give info to non-family. However by sweet-talking the nurse I more or less got her to "admit without admitting" that he was there. So "if he were here, he'd be in PICU." P must stand for protective, as in suicide watch. Now, this does not necessarily mean that he attempted such (for all I know he may have, but you can't conclude that from the limited information).

Anyway the card should go to PICU and MUST be deliberately worded without emotionalism. It is better if I am not the direct addresser.
-drl
New Thanks, that's good to know! I apologize about my suspicions

New I just called Christian Hospital NW
They told me that being a Mental Health patient is a confidential and cannot be confirmed or denied.

They told me that only a family member can get that info... and there is a special way to contact the Hospital to make sure you are "Authorized" under Missouri state law.

So, Ross if you can get in touch with Big Norm please help us make sure... to allay any cynicism here...

Not that I don't believe...

As I am the one sending that card DAMMIT!

Just that we are all concerned and want him to get well.

New Ditto here

New Comment
in your own words of course, and no inference that these are new thoughts ;-)

Get across the point that, whatever annoyance has been felt by various of us here, any 'active work' to recover will also be noted and applauded. Much can be forgiven where there is a demonstrable sign of working on the problem.

(I may not speak for anyone else, natch - but even the suspicion of some, that we have witnessed a hard-wired manipulative personality all along (?) may yield in time.. to a demonstration of much less whine with the cheese. But I think that may be a premature idea to get across, at whatever 'stage' he is in, today.)

Anyway, analysis fails. Maybe KISS and its + generalities is best? *Thanks* for umm intermediating for 'us'..

Ashton
(dunno what this org. will do 'for' him except, maintenance of some illusory state of drug-induced 'calmness'. Meds are So much cheaper than actual competent Attention.. Wonder if this is a new-job Corporate expense or.. the even lower dregs of uninsured-majority "care".)
New Personality types
Don't forget something... it's entirely possible for someone to be both unbalanced/suicidal and a hard-wired manipulative personality. One does not preclude the other... and in fact, ime, the hwmp tends towards the depressive side of things because the tactics they have internalised always lead to the same result: the driving away of loved ones.

New Well Said
-drl
New I have had recent experience wih this, unfortunately...
... though not as extreme (not even close) to the Norm situation.

While on that topic, I can say that some serious talks have led to some rapprochement, and that I hope that things will work out OK in the end.

New I am an extreme case of depression
and a bundle of nerves. Very few can say they suffered the same as I have my entire life from depression and other related illnesses.

[link|http://games.speakeasy.net/data/files/khan.jpg|"Khan!!!" -Kirk]
New But a hospital full of doctors
did not label me as the manipulative type. It hurts me to even have someone consider that I may be the manipulative type. What am I trying to manipulate here anyway if I am the manipulative type? Amazing how many doctors can label me a different personality type than many armchair psychologists here have?

Which one of you guys is doing the Stryfe bit to try and scare me? Please stop it!

New If he is still unwell,
I can predict how he will take the note:

"Get well soon so we can abuse you some more"

Depression and paranoia is hell. I pray that we don't make it worse.

things will never get back to normal, and that they already have.

New Likewise, and ditto.
New It is hard to know how to respond.
I mean, sure he has been difficult, but we all know that doesn't mean we want him to FOAD. I guess the correct sentiment is something along the lines of "We want you to get better, Norm." And that those that pray are praying for him.

When so many people in general society can't distingiush a person from their actions, it's wonderful to see distinction this happen more-or-less automatically here. :-)

Wade.

"Ah. One of the difficult questions."

New Exactly
I don't want him sick.

I don't want him behaving here as he has.

It sickens me to do it to anyone, but I have learned the hard way that sometimes you need to write someone off. (I was a stubborn mule, but that lesson eventually was deivered to me in a way that I couldn't ignore...) Until further notice I have written him off, but I would love to have a decent reason to re-evaluate that decision.

Regards,
Ben

New Re: Exactly
Some things do not need such a climactic decision. We have a sick person - he is our friend. We hope and we do what we can. It's not up to us.

Never make a decision until you must.
-drl
New Somewhat true
Some things do not need such a climactic decision. We have a sick person - he is our friend. We hope and we do what we can. It's not up to us.

On the other hand, sometimes "tough love" *is* the best approach to take. It is sure that arguing with him when he was in one of his fits didn't do much good. And those fits (whatever might be causing them) had been more frequent and of greater severity of late.
New I dont really want to comment but
I have a list of what he was given to "normalize" whoever ordered that should be sued for malpractice "MY OPINION" one of several is known for physical addiction paranioa and suicide. Has been known for 20+ years. I dont have a cure but when Norm posts in tech areas asking tech questions answer technically. If he goes off elsewhere stay mum unless you are being quoted as saying something ou need to clarify. He is a man who is getting by as we all are, sometimes better sometimes worse. My 2 cents.
thanx,

New I know the feeling
I was prescribed a drug (Diazepam, a version of Valium) that I didn't *know* was such, and as soon as I learned that I discontinued it. (Fortunately it was before I got hooked on it.) Never put complete trust in a doctor. That stuff messed me up enough as it was, even in the short time I was taking it.

New I have returned
I am back for more. Knock me down and like "The Terminator" I am back up again. I only slashed my neck and wrists several times, they stopped the bleeding and it is almost healed by now. I missed the jugular, or else I would not be posting here.
