New Office 11 to run only on Win2K SP3 and Win XP
[link|http://news.com.com/2100-1001-963777.html?tag=fd_lede1_hed|http://news.com.com/...?tag=fd_lede1_hed]

Limiting the final version of Office 11 to Windows 2000 and XP would potentially encourage users of older operating systems to upgrade, but it could further erode relations between Microsoft and business customers already stung by increases in volume licensing fees, analysts say. Some business customers have indicated that they may explore alternatives to Office, such as Sun Microsystems' StarOffice and OpenOffice, because of Microsoft's licensing plan.

New They're getting more desparate for revenue...

"Ah. One of the difficult questions."

New It's obv about the EULA!
Anything pre-SP3 for W2K is 'freer' of spyware (unless you count the NSA and whatever other back-doors infest already).

Install SP-3 and you give 'formal' permission for all future intrusions, neither scheduled nor afterwards acknowledged (if I read that POS Surrender Terms correctly).

Let them intensify this, and as soon as possible! - what better advt. for OO or Open- anything. C'mon Billy - show us what you Really Think. Oh and: anyone who buys this new incarnation deserves the Full BillyCo Rape - on Tee Vee live. Maybe on Home Box Orifice.

and that's just the Moderate view..
New Desparation . .
According to one of my reseller trade rags, only 10% of current business customers plan to upgrade to XP. Over 60% of Microsoft's business customers are still running 95/98, and most of the rest are running older Win2K. This portends a grim future for upgrades to Windows.NET, and for .NET itself.

The objective of Office 11 is "tight integration" with other Microsoft products - through the magic of XML. This can't be standard XML, because the threat tight integration is designed to counter, StarOffice / OpenOffice, already uses standard XML as its native file format. It's going to have to be pure, unadulterated "Microsoft XML".

Even the class of morons that constitutes corporate management can see this as a "lock in" with no hope of escape. If your competitor bites the bullet and develops on open standards (perhaps with a little help from Sun and/or IBM) instead of buying the Microsoft "solution in a box", you'll be left hung out to dry, twisting slowly in the wind as your "bottom line" drains off to Redmond.

Of course, given the current state of Web services security, this "tight integration" will allow some exploit to reach up into your enterprise and draw its entrails out through its asshole in a single joyfull stroke. There may not be a lot left to drain.

Cool.

New New Aaxnet topic?
Andy, you know I'm a fan of the style & content of your site.

Suggest a new 'Important Issues' - some summary of the European approach to M$, contrast with the snailpace of US Courts.. Guilty verdict, but no punishment in sight.

Maybe few of your customers deal with overseas equivalents (?) no big deal - the Euro attitude about the M$ Tax just might be enough to galvanize some renewed thought in the ones already in too deep: to read your comments on "Should Your Business Use Linux", and related.

Maybe your take on the newest EZ-install distros? Like the [link|http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/27742.html|Reg ] Xandros rave review + Doze emulation! At least get the lazy suckers to Look, spend the price of a test box. Obv it's never been easier to play - and dual-boot too, for the cheapskates and Unidentified Quivering Cowards.

Reviewing the spyware EULA after W2K SP2 and all future releases - surely would be good for a giggle; I mean - you've only been telling them for years about.. "Who Owns 'Your' data today and next?"

Yeah, I appreciate that cobbling up stuff as droll as this - takes time away from the Sangria con las muchachas sabrosas.. it's a dirty job but you know what they say.. If you need something done, take it to a busy person - s/he'll know how not to waste time. (Or something like that)

Cheers,
Ashton

PS "What We Do and for Who".. umm maybe add an m at the end? objective case. It's only glaring for us'ns punctilious types - but it can create unease too, in the ones who aren't Sure.. but think it sounds sorta off :-0
New Large article in work.
Earning $$ is interfering with completion.

New One point to touch on....
The likely cause is a desire to break Codeweavers' Crossover Office.

Cheers,
Ben

That would be CRN, right? MSFT is getting ready to spray money all over the channel to try and get them to push XP out to the customers by developing systems that require it. Reading between the lines of what the MSFT VP was saying, they're feeling a little desparate... ME sucked, and XP is only being a success in their tightest customers.

[link|http://consultron.ca/english|I'm still doing] the [link|http://www.ecomstation.com|ecomstation] gig, and judging by some of the recent contacts, people are finally ready to ditch MSFT. We could be looking at one of those major market break points where things start to change extremely rapidly...

This latest announcement is possibly the breaking point... I suspect that the news that Office 11 is going to require spyware revisions of Windows is behind some of the recent contacts I've received... companies (and esp. companies that deal with confidential data) are actually actively seeking alternatives.

I'm still doing the ecomstation gig, and judging by some of the recent contacts, people are finally ready to ditch MSFT.

Hope this pans out well for you :-)
