New Got it!
It had to do with the config file I used to call my dsl provider. I read Yet Another dsl-provider Example and it mentioned using the -m flag on pppoe to set it to 1452. I did so, and it all started working.

I think it's over now... and if I'm right, I'm sooooo glad.

Yes... I believe you're right about that. I read on groups.google.com about the issue, which made me revisit all the places where mtu was defined... while poking around, I found a place where it wasn't. I think it was working on a whole lotta websites because a lot of the backbone here in Canada has Nortel switches... anything going through those was working fine.
