New And a similar report
[link|http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/space/08/14/light.pollution/index.html|17 year olds who had never looked Up]

I'm fortunate to be 50 miles N. of SF, in country. Wall-wall stars any clear night. About to get a Mead scope. (Once had a Questar {sigh} - a rare jewel in itself, as near-perfect optics as physically possible - beat theor. resolution limit of whatever arc-seconds.)

As a few Yuppie villas began to sprout nearby.. walked up during construction to segue into - the beauties of the night sky (you also get here, at no charge) - and Oh.. BTW..

Would you consider *No* Hg lights? and.. going with the motion sensors.. when the UAV needs to go in the garage? So far so good; at 2, 3 am it is Dark. <1200 pop. town remains smart enough to have 0 streetlights etc. though a few paranoid houses in 'the village' (I'm outside) do have those Hideous abortions w/ ghastly effects on human eye. I'm shielded by bushes, fence.

Who would have thought that, in just a few generations.. homo-sap would henceforth Cease Looking Up, just down at some (*&%)%* keyboard or small e- toy instead ?

(But I admit that the Mead will use transistors too.. auto-tracking for the masses. Oh well.)

New Re: And a similar report
I'm convinced that the War on Darkness is partly responsible for the craziness in the modern world.
New Maybe the combo: increasing noise, decreasing dark (?)
New An idea for my house...
...I'd like to soundproof the bedrooms, and have the bedroom windows totally shutterable, and then somehow generate the illusion of a nighttime sky on the ceiling, pre-humanity. Maybe pipe in some wilderness noises...

Any ideas on the ceiling tech?

New Sky & Telescope, Astronomy mags
Haven't looked lately - prolly still humongous murals around , from accurate star locations to objects.

But a black-ish ceiling might have other effects - in daylight and any er future sale. Might want to try this out with a false ceiling first (hmmm illuminated pinholes with color, intensity to suit?)

Or read the short story, The Veldt, author forgotten. Sci-ish fiction, for other ideas..

Cheers,

A.
New I've read that one...
As far as the "blackish" ceiling goes - I was actually wondering about a "chromatic" ceiling of some sort - maybe some kind of plasma display or SOMETHING that you can do a dynamic display on. Electropigment? Does any of this stuff exist?

New For the price of That..
You could visit (what little's left of..) the Real Veldt.

On way back could detour and fly over (what little's left of..) the Amazon rainforest.

Hmmm .. maybe better to do the ceiling - it may outlast Both. Such as we are.

New And by visiting it...
...we thus condemn it. For what creature can resist the hordes of trampling man-animals come to visit the last smidgen of "wilderness?"

Better to stay in our homes and simulate, and spare the outer world our poisonous touch, until we discover the miracle of self-masturbation through robotics - and thus remove ourselves from the gene pool entirely.
