New Nintendo busted for restricting cross-border sales in Europe
[link|http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/54/27790.html|http://www.theregist...ent/54/27790.html]

Depending on the attitude the European Commission takes, this could be ominous for other console makers. You'll recall that last week Steve Ballmer was complaining about how Australian legislation was obstructing Microsoft's ability to make a fast - er, honest) buck with Xbox.

Specifically, he was talking about the court ruling which effectively allowed the chipping of consoles in order to get around regionalisation, and regionalisation is the manufacturer's practice which allows them to stop their machines playing out of region software. Which helps them restrict cross-border sales, and keep prices high.

New Nintendo grossly underestimated fine
[link|http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/54/27852.html|http://www.theregist...ent/54/27852.html]

Nintendo's share of the fine is an eye-watering \ufffd149m and it says it's going to appeal.

However, according to embedded changes that have remained in Nintendo's official press release sent out today, it seems the giant games company would not have contested the fine had it been below \ufffd50m.

In an embarrassing clanger, it seems Nintendo massively misjudged the scale of the fine it would receive.

Nintendo's statement accepts that it rigged the market in Europe during the 1990s admitting that it "did not comply with EU competition rules".

New So now we know
Like we didn't before, but we now have donfirmation that they will flagrantly flaunt the law as long as they expect the fine to be less than they expect to make from the illegal behavior. Why do judges not take this into account when levying fines? The point is supposed to be that "crime doesn't pay" isn't it?
