I've finally seen a report in a "major" media outlet
CNN had a (what do you call the banner that runs underneath the pretty face reading the news copy?) ticker saying there is supposed to be the largest anti-war demonstration since the Viet Nam war in Washington DC this weekend. From what I have read, this is likely to reach the 6 figure range of people marching. It is also supposed to be coordinated with marches in other countries.
An international anti-war statement of unprecedentad size and our corporate news treats it as a minor event. Why am I not surprised?

Think of it as Vietnam demonstrations
- remember those? Only this time: in advance. We have been there and done that. And if this current propaganda barrage is working so well with the non-involved masses: let's see the Pro First-Strike demonstrations next, as surely will follow. (if you are seriously.. suggesting that only weirdos find the prospect of following this Admin's plans into the Hell of Fright-wing bellicosity, rilly stupid.)
Pshaw.
Ashton there was no Net around in the Vietnam times; those marches were organized the old-fashined way -- and as this time: notwithstanding blackouts of the Corp. press, which we see has become even more self-cen$ored.

Bill..... please.
Just cause they don't want their sons/brothers to die doesn't mean they are wackos. This is not the same as the Vietnam war protests. This is a very different thing. People are actually saying they dont want us to START a war. WE are the aggressor. This is not a colonial action that we took over from the French. This is an entirely new thing. People are understandably upset. They may have to send Johnny off to war. They don't understand why. If this is so important, why are none of the chickenhawks who are pushing this bragging about the sons they have in harms way? <brandi>Hmmmmmm?</brandi>

I dont want to invade Iraq
I just saw a fine opportunity for humor and with a 13yo son any fighting should get done in the next 4 years or I will be unhappy. Demonstrations only work without the usual suspects. Respected men of both parties have to show. If you remember it wasnt until Joe Regular showed up in the anti war demonstrations that politicos got a clue. thanx, bill

If you say so
I just saw a fine opportunity for humor Let's get ready to guffaw---- bent nose baldie 2 guys from mash jackson and frasier? Huh? Being bewildered and befuddled doesn't get me rolling on the floor. I know the joke must be in there somewhere. Where? bent nose baldie = Alec Baldwin? 2 guys from mash jackson = what? frasier = Kelsey Grammer? Does this mean you expect to see only rich Hollywood types in the demonstration?

Oh yes.
I liked "Redo from Start" - it was reminiscent of an error in many microcomputer BASIC variants from 20 years ago. :-)
Ricully, of course, was suitably flustered the first time he saw that error message. :-)

Cool
Have you heard about it at all? I kind of thought my point had to do with the lack of media, not the numbers. Excellent shift. Writing for Rush?

Note RE Harris
He's impossible to categorize, which makes him interesting. A good candidate for the new Liberty party (not those wacked Libertarians, who can all be replaced by computers).
As a chessplayer, I'm guessing he plays the Sicilian as white and the reversed Sicilian when possible as black - otherwise the Nimzoindian - and there's a little Benko Gambit in there...

> 100K show up in DC march
per [link|http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A24432-2002Oct26.html|The Washington Post]. Oh well, Box ... you were close, within 4 orders of magnitude anyway (but I thougth that was expected performance for an MCSE or somethin ?! and I thought you was a AS400 type ;-)
OTOH and natch, the [link|http://www.nytimes.com/2002/10/27/politics/27PROT.html| NY Times] downplayed with.. 'thousands' of protestors marched through Washington's streets... But then, what would one expect from the Librul Press? Wonder what the National / Worldwide TOTAL looks like ? Not that Muricans much care about them furrin numbers.
Thought for the month: may Dubya reexperience LBJ's quaint expression.. hunkered down in the White House reel soon now.

Make that: closer to 200K
The Times runs a tacit correction
The demonstration on Saturday in Washington drew 100,000 by police estimates and 200,000 by organizers', forming a two-mile wall of marchers around the White House. The turnout startled even organizers, who had taken out permits for 20,000 marchers. They expected 30 buses, and were surprised by about 650, coming from as far as Nebraska and Florida.
A companion demonstration in San Francisco attracted 42,000 protesters, city police there said, and smaller groups demonstrated in other cities, including about 800 in Austin, Tex., and 2,500 in Augusta, Me. This per Tom T's blog. I wonder why there's no standard crowd-counting technique - yet. Ashton

Sure there is.
If you agree with the crowd - take a sample, multiply by area used by crowd, then multiply by 10.
If you disagree with the crowd - take a sample, multiply by area used by crowd, then divide by 10, and print the correction a week later under "Pets wanted."
:-)
End of world rescheduled for day after tomorrow. Something should probably be done. Please advise.
