tabbed interface?
OK, Jabber's nice and all, but it's YAIMC (Yet Another IM Client) and I've already got gaim that does that stuff for me.
On top of that, I can't find the "one window, tabbed interface" preference in Jabber. This is a "must-have" feature for me, because I'm not gonna go having umpteen Jabber windows scattered all about my desktop. I've been using Jabber for an hour or two now, and I've already got 4 chat windows plus the default "who's on" window. I've been through the prefs and didn't see it. Is someone out there less blind than I am? (Yes, I realize that part of this is the newness of the client and all, but I'd still prefer 1 to 2 even.)
Failing that, I also searched [link|http://gaim.sourceforge.net/|SourceForge] for a gaim Jabber plugin. Unfortunately, I couldn't find one. Anyone got a pointer?
Thanks.

while we're asking noob questions
Isn't part of the point to have one client for all the protocols? If so, how do I point this thing to ICQ or IRC?

Jabber apparently has a hard time with AIM
Says so on their home page. Or somewhere else on their site. AOL likes to block Jabber servers. So while Jabber theoretically interacts with and "does" AIM, AOL blocks the individual servers. Therefore, Jabber cannot turn into my "all-in-one" IM client.
Hence my question about gaim (whereupon I've already set up 2 AIM IDs, 4 Y! IDs, and an ICQ ID).

Cargocult has to load the support on the server.

That won't help...
...when AOL decides that they don't want his Jabber server talking with AIM and start blocking him on their end.
[link|http://www.acronymfinder.com/af-query.asp?String=exact&Acronym=AIUI&Find=Find|AIUI], the message you type (supposing you're using the AIM interface) goes from your machine to Peter's guildenstern to the AIM server to your intended non-IWETHEY recipient who is theoretically not using Peter's Jabber server. If AOL steps in the middle there and stops messages from Guildenstern being sent, then, well, it doesn't matter if Peter adds in AIM support on his end.

Jabber out of the box
GAIM does jabber..the plugin comes with it: Q. How do I use MSN, Yahoo, Jabber, IRC, Gadu-Gadu(GG), Napster, or Zephyr? A. First load the plugin. Protocol plugins come with Gaim, so just go to the Plugins dialog (Tools->Plugins, or the Plugins button on the start screen) and then click "Load." The protocol plugins are named libprotocol.so, so MSN for instance is provided by libmsn.so, and Gadu-Gadu is provided by libgg.so.
After you have loaded the appropriate plugin, use the Account Editor (Tools->Accounts, or the Accounts button on the start screen) to add the account.
In 0.60 and latter, loading the plugin is not necessary, as protocols are automatically loaded as needed.

Looks like what I really want is Gaim
Time to go set it up.

Slow down.
The Gaim Jabber plugin doesn't have a way to point to a different server.

Revisited.
Whoops. I stand corrected (thanks Addison).
Enter @guildenstern.dyndns.org after your "name" in Screen Name and it will look on the correct server. :-)
