And upon an unsuspecting public was unleashed...
zIWETHEY Site Search!
Break my search... please! (*brrrrmp tsht*)
But seriously folks, it's a search only another could love.
Right now it's got everything up til this morning in the search indexes. I need to modify the stored procedures to update the search table upon insert. Shouldn't take long; I just don't feel like doing it this instant. Until then, enjoy full text searching on most of the forums.
Syntax: single words or phrases in double quotes. All terms are 'and'ed for the query.
Example: subject search of "good man" returns one post; subject search of good man (no quotes) returns six posts.
Matches are case insensitive. For single word terms, matches are based on word roots. Example: searching for 'business' will return things with 'busy' in them as well.

Neato! A couple of quick requests.
Could you also include the post number in the list of returned matches? In my quick searches, the order of the post creation date/time of the returned articles seems to be arbitrary - having the post number visible as well would make it quicker to find the older/newer post of interest.
Also, the button label is "Save" yet repeated searches revert to the blank criteria. Perhaps instead of "Save" a more descriptive label would be "Search Now" or something.
Thanks a bunch!

Oh, jeez.
Well, one of those I can take care of in a hurry. I forgot to remove the isAdmin check around the new form button code. :-P

The fields clear?
Odd... I don't see that. I spent a good 15 minutes making sure they *didn't* clear, in fact. :-P

They do here, if I'm using it the way you expect.
Click on Site Search link. All fields at default except for:
Author -> Another Scott
Search in message body -> russell
Click Save
I get 2 links back. If I then click on Site Search again everything's back to the default.
I am using JunkBuster but have IWeThey excluded from the proxy bin.
HTH. And thanks again for the tool. It'll be very handy.
Cheers, Scott.

Oh, that's working as intended.
If you don't get any search results, however, the form will come back with the values you searched.

On sort order:
I'm going to be adding result sorting options. I just wanted to get the basics out there first.

Here's the thing
Up until this week, whenever I would describe this place (software + audience) to anyone and compare it to the old IWE, I would always come to the "but": "But it doesn't have any searhing yet." Now there is no "but". It's everything that we liked about the old IWE software, plus a whole lot more.
The only things missing (and neither is technical) are regular columnists -- ones who have the time and resources to devote to regular, feature-length articles -- and a steady stream of fresh readers. And the second of those is only potentially an asset, as the S/N ratio would likely plummet.

Excellent.
Yes, search has been a sticking point for a while.\r\n \r\nPersonally, I gauge a feature's usefulness by how long it takes me to start using it.\r\n \r\n \r\n- Save Without Preview: immediate. Big win.
\r\n- Show New Forums Only: immediate. REALLY big win. Performance win too.
\r\n- Codes/link translation: immediate. Cool, but not as massively time-saving as the first two.
\r\n- Link targets: eh. I immediately set it to 'same window' and left it.
\r\n- Search: not immediate, but I have used it at least once (to post that link about Ballmer and the X-box in Australia). Useful as all hell when you need it; no-op otherwise.
\r\n \r\n \r\nWe *used* to have some regular columnists (*poke* Robert Brewer and Wade)...

-scott anderson

Search would have come in handy on a couple of occasions...and I'm sure I'll have a moment of weakness and fall in need again.

All my articles are still around.
They're on [link|http://yceran.org/static/|my web server] with links to the few that I also posted here for discussions.
But yes, I should some more.
