The Hell of Sinus Problems
I think I'd trade having cancer or being gay for clean and dry sinuses. At least I'd have a few weeks without the never-ending drainage, the lungs and bowels full of mucous (the latter particularly odious), the constant watering eyes (to the point of having difficulty reading), the endless sneezes, sniffles, and nose-blowing, the fortune spent on medicines with cumulative side effects, the total sapping of bodily energy that is the overall result.
I avoid doctors like I avoid Mets fans. But I've determined I have to do something as I sit here trying to focus on the screen through the eye water. Looks like another night where I will need half a box of Sudafed to sleep.
Anyone here have sinus issues? What helped? I'm at my wit's end. Telltale symptom - never ending clear watery Niagaras of nasal discharge. I don't have an infection I think, because that would cause yellow-green snotballs instead of the clear slime I create in physically impossible quantities.

new info on clear slime
been hacking up serios lugies since mid september. Went to a doc when I had a tad cash. Prescribed 10 days worth of amox 500ml ceared up the leaking ear. Still have serious snotballs, wet coff, sound like a lunger. My son has been on 25 days worth of antibiotics and his ear is still draining. Think this is either wet nile or TB but the chest xrays came back negative, Unserstand the willingness to change sexual orientation over this it is highly annoying, sbnrefle snort, hack, thanx, bill

naval rum mate (here I use pussers)
pour about a 1/2 a shot glass(1/2 a gill) and force it down then sip hot unsweet unmilked tea(not too muxh a couple of sips). You will/might chuck it but repeat every 15 minutes. It will help with the bugs in the stomach and the tea helps with the other end and about a pint down you wont really care. thanx, bill

Fungus (?)
Recall some time back reading a non-authoritative article to the effect that (as with many houses 'infected' with degrees of, debilitating to humans -type spores) .. many of us are alleged to be carrying around long-running fungi in & around sinus.
I haven't investigated further, but Prednisone was suggested in article as the likely nostrum: yet I can recall that even decades ago, thet was the 2nd pill for a new MD to prescribe when they hadn't the fuck of an idea what might really be the problem. Bet - the cost for analysis means any HMO will NOT spend the $ to find out; WILL grab some horrific steroid and send you on your way.
(Dunno what fungal tests would be like; since I have a kinda chronic sniff - but not nearly at the level you describe + only occasional sneezes: keep us informed if you get a diagnosis more believable than a Microsoft Fix-pack, OK?)
It's on my list (to find out) - know a local osteopath with a great track record. There are so few *wise* practitioners of Anything, left - we're all in the same boat: living in a society which runs on dissembling & hype and phony machine-produced 'Profe$$ionals' ie Capitalist Corp Medicine. :(

Additional risk for women
Bone loss.
As my mother discovered in her 50's when she managed to snap both wrists at once. (She was chasing a ball, tripped, grabbed a door...shouldn't have hurt either wrist under normal conditions.)
It is a risk for men as well, but men start of with bigger bones so it isn't as worrisome for us.

This time of year...
... it's mold. There's a particular type of mold that changes in September/October causing severe allergic reactions. I used to get the same thing every year: coughing, runny nose (at times I could hold a cup under it for the constant drip), sneezing fits that lasted a good 10 minutes.
Now I get allergy shots, and I'm on Zyrtec. The combination makes it bearable.
Try the shots, and try a real antihistimine instead of Sudafed. That stuff is crap.

I use strong saline
I squirt strong saline, not isotonic, up my nose with a syringe. I boil and filter (depending on the water supply) about a half cup of water and add 2 or 3 tablespoons of salt. I measure by eye and usually use sea salt 'cause that's what I keep in the house by preference. I pretty much keep squirting until I can feel it running down the back of my throat. Not pretty, but it works, is cheap, and I avoid yet another batch of drugs.

Me too, but not quite so strong
My doctor recommended doing a saline rinse a few years ago, works well. Just 1 tablespoon per cup, though. Use a [link|http://www.dmartstores.com/nasasbysaf1s.html|nasal aspirator] and squirt up one nostril. The crap flushes out the other. Alternate nostrils until the cup of saline solution is gone.

Iodine shouldn't hurt anything
except maybe a delicate sauce :) I use a couple table spoons to a cup of water. Possibly does not need to be that strong. Spice's doc said a tablespoon. Might try that first and adjust according to need.

makes sense
My doctor said the saline rinse was used by people who'd had work done on their nose(reconstructive or corrective surgery). The saline helps it heal quicker, kinda like how cuts heal quicker after swimming in the ocean.

But, I buy it at a drug store - spray saline solution. It's expensive, given what it really is.

I do something like that for sore throats
But nastier. If I can see the sore areas, then I put a clump of straight salt on it and leave it there. Really smarts, but knocks out the bugs very consistently. Repeat daily if necessary.

Snap judgement
You are having a serious allergic reaction to something in your environment. Go get the scratch test and find out what it is. Once you know you can determine if it realistic to try avoiding whatever is causing these symptoms or take the series of shots that builds up immunity to the allergen. The shots work. I've seen the results. It takes a while (a year or 2) but it does work.

My ex had the same symptoms for years.
Her HMO supplied doc always blew off her complaints and said she was just getting a "low grade cold" all the time. She finally switched doctors on my advice and got one who actually investigated the complaints. Bingo. Allergic to cat dander. Not a chance in hell of her getting rid of her cat so she went for the shots. Started out as 2 shots a week for 3 months, then once a week for 4 months then one very other week and so on. Symptoms started to diminish after about 2 months.

For drying up runny nose . .
I usually sip a strong tea made from (reasonably fresh) sage leaves (the herb, not the brush). The giant sage that grows wild up around Ojai is excellent for this.
Gormet store sage probably won't work, culinary herb farmers grow for appearance, not active ingrediants, but a house that deals in medicinal herbs might have something workable (and a lot cheaper than the gormet stores).

Drier Climate....
When you look at your socialist country idea, you might consider one with a very dry climate. If you're looking at France, stay away from the coast!
One thing I have found is that I have sinus problems in any climate that has more than about 25 inches of rain per year.
When I visit Colorado, New Mexico, or West Texas ( Lubbock, Amarillo, El Paso ) my sinuses clear out and I feel much better. Too bad I can't seem to find any jobs in the region that pay well.
Finally, I've heard theories that our diesel and gas pollution actually contribute to asthma in the major metropolitan areas. Diesel is especially bad because of the dust generated by the exhaust.

Sounds like allergies
If you take Benedryl does it help?
I have allergies to anything you might inhale - dogs, cats, horses, ragweed, pollen, mold, farms in general... I get the extra bonus of allergy triggered asthma, I get the sinus thing with a steady drop in lung capacity.
Antihistamines help and become necessary in the spring and fall. In Denver, it was the annual cottonwood shedding that sent me to hell every spring. Bronchodialators like ventolin or alupent become necessary and during peak times I occasionally need inhalation steroids for a couple weeks - especially to recover from a cold or similar.
Change your venue (go to Arizona for a few days) and see what happens - you'll know then.

I didn't grow up with allergies, but now I'm a mess throughout the fall and spring. Onset seemd to be about the time I started working with computers full time. Is it something in the silicon or what?

Had em all my life
They are better now than they were when I was a kid. I used to wheeze all the time and was kept indoors in the winter time during recess in 1st and 2nd grade because the cold exacerbated the problem. So maybe I compensated for lack of physical development by reading a lot.
I went to college in New Mexico - that was amazing - first time I was allergy free (mostly) in my life. Living in Denver was also good. The bay area was less good.

Re: Sounds like allergies
Yes - in two ways 1) it works systemically as advertised 2) I sleep for days so I don't notice the discomfort. So that's usually out of the question.
I actually got along well in Colorado when the natives were suffering. I rarely had any issues while growing up in the South. There must be a habituation component in the opposite direction, i.e. the more you are exposed over time, the more likely you are to develop a reaction.

Then it probably is allergies
There are better non-drowsy antihistamines your doctor can give you. I think things like allegra and such.
Your other option is to just move to a new climate. It takes a few years for you to develop sensitivity to new allergens. That's why you had a respite in Denver I'd guess.
