if it was made by the OEM then it will have ways of identifying the machine and then no


Windows 98 and Windows Me have no way of uniquely identifying the hardware they're running on.

well, that may be but when I ran WinME off a gateway disk it told me it wasn't a gateway machine (it wasn't) and quit

New That is a rescue disk...not an OEM copy.
They started that with Me/2k...not giving OEM copies of the OS...but rather preconfigured rescue disks.
