New MS Project Server 2002?
Last time I looked at MS Project at all, it was just a standalone desktop app.

Now I'm being asked to look into "MS Project Server 2002", list price ~$1200. Which appears to be a server-based tool (I suspect it was seen as a five-user Project license)...which apparently requires several other products. Including MS SQL Server, and MS Project Project Server (this from some very garbled vendor copy), possibly additional CALs, and possibly a web client.

Anyone familiar with recent iterations of MS Project? I'll try to get some specs, but it sounds like we're not buying what we need here.

New The beast's site.
Try [link|http://www.microsoft.com/office/project/howtobuy/default.asp|here] for starters, then [link|http://www.microsoft.com/office/project/evaluation/compare.asp|here] for info on the differences betwixt standard/server, and note the first footnote:

Microsoft Project Server 2002 requires Microsoft Windows\ufffd 2000 Server and Microsoft SQL Server\ufffd 2000 for enterprise project management functionality. Using the features and services of Microsoft Project Server, including Microsoft Project Web Access\ufffdthe Microsoft Project Server Web interface\ufffdrequires a Microsoft Project Server Client Access License (CAL).

New Saw that...
...and it was more or less what tipped me off that someone might have thought they were buying a five-user desktop license, rather than a server product.

New oh gag, ya hafta use that?
use excell to draw gant charts use a simple table to carry the data for the project. Use Primavera if you need project mangement tools. For what I would call a small netork implementation, 20 cities 2 nodes in each carried a full time MSproject data entry person plus a pm and a director. Coulda drawn it on a napkin and used an spreadsheet to lay it out.

...started. Thought it might be useful to start discussing [link|http://twiki.iwethey.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/ApplicationsProjectManagement|project management apps] for Linux and non-Linux platforms. I'd appreciate contributions, particularly selection criteria and/or web-based suggestions.

FWIW, [link|http://mrproject.codefactory.se/|MrProject] looks pretty neat at first glance. It's a clone of the MS Project client. Haven't used the latter in years'n'years. Plan to give MrProject a spin for a while. Web-based deal would also be nice.

New Reading MS Project files...
...is apparently a requirement for what we need. For which I'm strongly suspicious that MS Project is a requirement. That said, what sorts of files (reports? project files?) does MS Project generate?

New The in and out of it......
Project can read in:

Project files
Project templates
Project workspaces
MPX files
Access databases
Excel Workbooks
Text files
CSV files

Project can write:

Project files
Project templates
Web pages
Project '98 files
Access databases
Excel Worksheet
Excel Pivot Table
Text files
CSV files

It is still a POS IMO....why won't a spreadsheet template approach work?
New Documentation?
I have an interest, though it's definitely on the backburner, of writing files that can be read by MSProject. Is there a definitive resource for learning how-to-do such things?
New not difficult...
There is some info over at the msdn site (bleck!)

It's not difficult though....if you create a spreadsheet
you certainly can open/use/save it in Project. What exactly
are you trying to do?
New Trying to...
...do some team coordination software. Not so much project based as it is goal oriented. It's my moonlight job - which is why it's on the backburner. Eventually, though, I'll need to feed stuff to & from Project, as I don't really want the software to get into the intricacies of project management software.
New Looks like it's just a frontend
Which would be smart, actually. As people keep bringing up, you can simulate most of what Project does with spreadsheets and email. It makes sense that they would create a file format that is essentially a config file for how to import data from various Office apps, and then how to use other Office components to display it.

New ...vs: Oracle Collaboration Suite?
Though it's pitched more as an [link|http://www.oracle.com/features/ocs/t1cs_email.html|Outlook / Exchange killer], the collaboration suite (which I first ran across looking for calendaring stuff) might be a logical base for building PM solutions. Doesn't appear to be geared that way at the moment, but $65/seat incremental pricing is hella better than $1500 server + $1000/seat + CALs.

The MSFT requirements lit on MSPS2k+2 (pointed at in this thread) is simply nuts. Obfuscatory beyond belief.

I know we've discussed it here before. I'll bet Bruce Perens would love to buy it from them and market it himself.

Talking about the contract with the Kompany to build a groupware app, of course. And it is (tentatively) to be called Kroupware, also "of course."
