Dirtier clean-rooms than today. Still, extreme pains taken with the sealing of the cans on those mostly-discrete transistors, etc. Everything was logged and checked and rechecked. Met a few of the folks who worked on those, at the time. 'Twas a labor of Love. (the only kind of labor ever 'Worth' doing, all things considered.)

You need to allow cookies from nyt.com to be able to use it, though. I tried logging in once after long ago having blocked cookies from nyt.com and it didn't work.
