New Our obsolete computers, at work.
Some months ago I read an article describing the megatons of e- crap shipped back to this area: all those >6 mos. old boxes and such.

Cyanide leaches out the trace gold; a few other things are salvaged - by macerating all the boards into a slurry, then chemical treatment and - finally the dried detritus is burned, releasing all the heavy metals Not reclaimed + the toxics which epoxy generates: directly into the *air*. (As they don't 'burn' very well, especially those metals: considerable fuel is expended at this stage too)

They are our dump. Didn't notice this factor mentioned re the Brownishness, nor could I estimate its % contribution. Global warming, Shrub?? Nahhh.. it's them cockamamie scientist cranks. We'll have to study it some more - via a grant to the Faith-based Creationism Ecumenical Council, folks who really Know chemical engineering.

Best solution to homo-sap planning: Rapture on out, methinks.

Hey this stuff beats SNL all hollow!

If "certain Europeans" means me -- as is possible to impute from your post being in this particular thread -- let me just remind you that I am not the one to whine about how the problem with the Kyoto Treaty was that all those evil Chinese and Brazilians are allowed to pollute so much more than the poor old USA (or, for that matter, poor old Europe). See the difference?

(If it didn't mean me, please disregard this post -- and allow me to return to my regular scheduled paranoia... ;^)

New Would you like to know why?
Because many Asian countries in that area have little or no pollution laws. Like Thailand, if you ever went to Bangkok where a lot of the factories are, you will have to wear a mask out in public. Most people who ride motorcycles or "Tuktuk" cars with no windows will be wearing a surgical mask or a filter mask. Even the Police wear them. Automobiles have no emission laws in Thailand, so they can run them as dirty as they want to be. I assume that Burma, India, Pakistand, and others all lack the type of pollution laws that the US has.

Even Godzilla couldn't stand up to it, and would choke on it and eventually die.

New Population Control
Is fundamental. And apparently automatic as well. Population density in Asia will be reduced - one way or another.

Higher population densities require application of higher organizing principles, intelligence, and careful management. Not bloody likely.

New Nice to know we're doing our part..
But we're cancelling out our pre-planning of their populations simultaneously - given the slashes to birth control by the current Holy Admin (a small part in our already miniscule %GDP of foreign aid, anyway) - so which is it gonna be?

Pop.control via exported toxics / pop. increase via withheld aid for clinics? Ya Can't Have Both!

Maybe it's too subtle for me to get - some o' that Hilbert spaciness perhaps?

Ashton
New But >we< are the evil polluters!
See...Kyoto was too strict and would be [link|http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/1997/global.warming/disagreements/|economically ruinous] to China...and yet India, China and the Asian subcontinent are all far worse polluters than we in the US.

Yet we had to cut our emissions by 93% while China continues to get worse and most of the worst developing offenders were not even listed in the agreement.

Yet we (US) are the evil, nasty destroyers of the planet.

I get it now.

Les'see now...

You mean, "we" (=the USA, I assume) are cutting emissions by 93% -- in part by SENDING YOUR TOXIC COMPUTERS TO China to be "recycled"?

And China "continues to get worse" -- in part by "recycling" YOUR TOXIC COMPUTERS?

Yeah, poor poor you -- always the downtrodden ones; always sacrificing yourselves for others...

New Add: Mexico and other dumps, of course
Alas Mexico, the maquiladores ecology-Free zones - whose locked-in serf-labor replaces as much US labor as Corps can manage: is a bit close to home, given the weather and all. So there may be some US lip-service paid to "cleaning up this small oversight". But like the at-home Toxics SuperFund - any $$ spent for this unprofitable work initially --- shall fade away.. at the attention-span's allowed rate.

Sounds like a Capitalist Win to me:

A) Fight wars n'stuff so as to continue using up everyone Else's petroleum / save Ours - at prices and production rates we kinda subtly umm 'influence'.

B) Be generous though: export the worst garbage with the same alacrity.

Seems fair: import/export.

New Makes sense

Well, they built most of the components, so we're really just sending them back. ;p

New And again..
..we are the evil destroyers of the planet by pulling out of Kyoto...which addressed nothing about correcting the problems in areas where pollution is FAR worse.

Why can't everyone just face the fact that the Kyoto agreement was just >bad<...did little or nothing to address the true problem and get over it.

Instead..we continue to get [link|http://www.softwolves.pp.se/misc/gwb.en.shtml|this].

New Re: Asian Brown Cloud - it was more light tan (grin)

But it sat here in HK for just under 3 days. Couldn't see all that far when it was at its worst, but, all in all it was nothing compared to spending 3 hours in Causeway Bay going shopping (next door to Wan Chai).

The rain of the past week washed it all away. Hmm that rain also washed some parts of the new teritories away as well (rain in HK is sometimes worse that the worst pollution). This is one of the few places I have ever seen where every wall that is part of a hill, even in outlying villages, is registered & has a number - we are expected to phone in the wall's name when we see it collapsing or being washed away (no joke).

My theory is that the Asian Brown Cloud is actually a new secret weapon being tested by Bush. Kinda like a big bug spray. The secret of this weapon (so I hear from my spies) is that the spray gets dispersed over thousands of square miles & after three days of continuous sunshine it is converted to a deadly poisonous gas that kills all - the counter weapon is to rain on it - so we all got saved this time.

Cheers

Doug
