O Brother, Where Art Thou?
I saw [link|http://us.imdb.com/Title?0190590|O Brother, Where Art Thou?] at my sister's about a month back. They picked the movie and I was "oh well", thinking it wouldn't be that good. Boy was I wrong, it was very good.
One thing was bothering me when I saw it though, in that I had a subtle feeling that there was more to the story than what it first appeared. Turned out the story is based on Homer's Odyssey. George Clooney's character is Ulysses Everett McGill. Another example is John Goodman's character, a bible salesman with an eyepatch. He's the cyclops. There's also a scene with some women singing while washing their laundry in the river - yep, the sirens.
I saw it at the store today and decided I liked it enough that I picked it up. I plan to reread the Odyssey before I watch it again to see what I didn't pick up on the first go around.

Agreed
I saw it a few weeks ago, and if you haven't read Homer's Odyssey (as I haven't), or if it's been a long while, then you definitely miss something. Screenwriters did a good job. It's still an enjoyable movie, mind. But it's missing something. That "something" (that I still don't know what it is, mind) apparently got lost in the translation.

Really? Damn, now I gotta go find a copy.
I can hear it in my head right now, and it's the way I wrote it. I just can't hear it the other way. Odd.

Loved it
But then I've been a fan of the Odyssey and the Illiad for many years. As much fun as I get out of the story, the music is the best reason to catch this film. Absolutely fine bluegrass.
I especially liked the use of the Robert Johnson myth about selling his soul to the devil in exchange for blues skill. Sounds odd, but mixing the myths worked for me.
"We are patriotic citizens too. Patriotism means 'love of country', caring about its people, its ecosystem, and others around us. Not giving blind loyalty and a blank check to George W. Bush. We are patriotic enough to care about the long term effects instead of just the short term gain.
Therefore it is our patriotic duty to guard our country and our constitution against people and forces hiding behind the flag."

Loved it, loved it, loved it...
It was good, entertaining fun with an outstanding soundtrack. My sister is a 'folkie' from way back (used to be with the Heartbeats Rhythm & Blues Quartet) so I just adored this movie to pieces.
I've got the songs on my iPod so when any of the tunes come on in my car, I crank it up and sing along at the top of my lungs. (Much to the annoyance of my wife, if she happens to be riding with me.)
