New How the fuck would he know???
But Texas Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican, rejected the calls for gun control. He said restricting the rights of "law-abiding citizens... doesn't work. It's not effective. It doesn't prevent crime."
Can't know that before it's been tried.

New He's technically correct, the best kind of correct
Anyone who can access a gun and go kill 20 people could probably access a car and drive into a bus stop. Similar outcome.

But that doesn't happen. Because we haven't fetishized car violence the way we have gun violence.

So okay, Ted, the gun wasn't the problem. What was? And what are you doing about that? Oh, nothing at all? That's what I thought.

Doesn't mean we still shouldn't have better gun laws.

New Ted Cruz is a worthless pile of shit.
The only reason I don't hope for him to develop pancreatic cancer and die slowly in agonizing pain over a couple years is because we need his lot to go away a lot quicker than that, so I'll take him and his ilk all dying from heart attacks. Still fucking hurts, just a lot quicker.
Ceterum autem censeo pars Republican esse delendam.
New No, he isn't even that.
That could (maybe) happen, but:
  1. That wasn't the subject; the subject was gun violence.
  2. He has no proof such a transfer would take place. Brits aren't killing each other with cars all the time since their guns were taken away after Lockerbie.

New Re: No, he isn't even that.
We're actually famously good at not killing each other with cars. I think some of the Scandihoovian nations may have better road safety than us, but that's about it.

In fact, we're pretty good at not killing each other, full stop. London (in particular; other large cities like Birmingham and Manchester are also included) does have a knife problem, though. But, as we've seen in the US, we can handwave away young black people killing each other as "just gang trouble".
New yes it has, just not here
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firearms_regulation_in_Mexico
By the 1960s, the government modified Article 10 of the Constitution and enacted the Federal Law of Firearms and Explosives, limiting gun ownership to small-caliber handguns, heavily restricting the right to carry outside the homeplace and ending a cultural attachment to firearms by shutting down gun stores, outlawing the private sale of firearms, and closing down public shooting facilities.
doesnt seem to be helping

New That's because we're flooding their economy with black market guns
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/the-flow-of-guns-from-the-u-s-to-mexico-is-getting-lost-in-the-border-debate
For example, the report found that from 2014 to 2016, 49 percent of crime guns seized in El Salvador were originally purchased in the U.S. In Honduras, 45 percent of guns recovered in crime scenes were traced to the United States as well.
Ceterum autem censeo pars Republican esse delendam.
New so they still use guns illegally? why do you think that will stop gun violence here?
"Science is the belief in the ignorance of the experts" – Richard Feynman
New Stopping the supply is the first step.
The problem is people think if you don't instantly succeed, then "nothing can be done." Cut off the supply, the remaining guns will slowly deteriorate over time. Sure, some people will actively maintain their guns, but the vast majority of 2nd amendment fellators are fucking idiots who will let their guns rust in place.
Ceterum autem censeo pars Republican esse delendam.
New Because THEY aren't flooding YOUR market with illegal guns?
Not every nation is as shitty in every respect as you apparently assume they must be just because you are.

New So now you're just flailing about.
Hey, somebody somewhere is eventually going to build a nuke, so why bother doing anything to stop handguns?
Ceterum autem censeo pars Republican esse delendam.
New He was talking about over there, not anywhere else. There, it hasn't.
And most other places where it has been tried, it has worked. I thought you'd be somewhat familiar with, for instance, Airstrip One (aka Great Britain)?

If you could try to excise that fucking defend-all-the-US-shit-even-when-you-should-know-better reflex from your spinal cord, that would be a nice thing. It's carcinogenic, you know: Gives you turning-into-a-reflexive-liar cancer.

But maybe it's too late for you already.

New I get that, was pointing out one of many places where it hasn't worked
we share somewhat of a language with the UK but the cultural differences are large. We are a different place. We cant even get people to wear masks in a pandemic how in the hell are you going to take their guns away?

New How did we get people to wear seat belts or stop smoking in offices?
We changed the rules and the laws.

It takes time. But that's what's necessary.

Cheers,
Scott.

New Well, there's obviously nothing to be done.
2A rules! and if some schoolchildren must periodically die, then so be it. It's terrible, but thoughts and prayers.

If we can't do everything, then there's clearly no point doing anything.
New In 2018, one out of five agreed with you
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2018/03/27/one-in-five-americans-want-the-second-amendment-to-be-repealed-national-survey-finds/

Maybe you got 100% increase in the last 4 years. That's an incredibly high number. But it's easy for the math to work. Say maybe you have two in five.

Without that repeal then the states that want to be a free-for-all gun-wise will be.

Sure, we might get incremental things like universal background checks. But only when a professional sells a gun. Unless there is a federal gun registration law, there will never be an incentive for an individual buyer/seller pair to do a background check. And a registration law will never happen because that's the starting of creating the list to take away the guns.

Whether or not that taking away the guns is the goal of the people making these laws doesn't matter. The people with the guns are terrified of the authorities coming and taking them. The starting point is registering them to make that possible.

It is illegal at the federal level to create a federal registration list. Illegal. It is actually against the law to make a law to force a felon to register his illegal gun because that would be self-incrimination and you can't force a citizen to incriminate themselves. A drug dealer could pull the same logic with tax stamps, but since the drugs themselves are illegal to start off with, I guess no one ever thought it was worth taking that to the supreme Court.

I don't see Congress ever changing that.
