No, not Ma Rainey's :-/
When I heard the panting, my first thought was "must be the dog". Then braincell #1 kicked in - the dog is in the house. I looked right to see a young black bear heading at a right angle to the path I was on, going at a pretty good clip. It is amazing how quiet they are, even at speed - no crunching sounds, no breaking branches - just the breathing.
Braincell #2 then said it was time to get out of there. Unfortunately, the rest of the braincells froze and bear protocol went straight out the window. (Back away - don't turn. Riiight.) 2 steps in I turned again. Lucky me, that big black bottom was bouncing along the trail in the opposite direction.
30' is about as close as I care to get to a bear with nothing but a few trees in between...
(We do get bears around the house every once in a while but this was the first encounter in the woods.)
