New My cat knows "here"
I used to think of cats as cuddly alien beasts but communication was impossible.

I never thought a cat understood its name. So I never really even bother to talk to cats using their names. And sometimes I forget my own cat's name because I simply don't use it. It's the gray cat.

M Junior's cat is the fluffy face cat. Her cat is a swedish forest cat. Or is that Norwegian? Not bothering the Google.

So anyway back to my cat. The gray cat, the Russian blue, knows "up", knows "down", and will follow my finger and go places when I say so. I thought they didn't do that.
New Wow, a cat that doesn't think it's in charge! :)

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."

-- Isaac Asimov
New Actually no, she's in charge
She has a specific goal. Not to get beat up by the fluffy face cat. She knows I'll protect her.

So she sticks close with me when we're not in the bedroom. That means I have a cat nearby that's about to be attacked by another cat and I have to constantly intervene. So this cat will look to me to tell her where to go next, where is safe, and she ends up following my directions.

On the other hand, she determines when she's going to follow the directions. I can never depend on it.
New Well, this LRPD could apply to cats.
"Seriously, for someone who shows some signs of intelligence, the consistency with which you misunderstand anything inconvenient to you is quite amazing."
New Cats can definitely learn.
All of the cats I've lived with down through the years learnt their names. One with some difficulty, I will admit. My current one knows both her proper name and the most common nickname I use.

I also taught my current one to come to a particular hand gesture because she gets a nice pat from it, although she doesn't always come to me. She also knows a handful of words, including "breakfast", "dinner" and "inside". She's just a tabby, so no idea of genetics. A previous cat I had was Burmese and she was smart as paint, as are most Burmese and Siamese cats. Russian blues are also reputed to be fairly smart.

Wade.

Plumbing is not coding. There is no concept of rolling back the previously saved version of the house.
