booze buys up
https://apnews.com/c407ecb931c6c528b4cceb0ecc216f0cBOTTOMS UP: One way Americans are coping with the new coronavirus? Booze. U.S. sales of alcoholic beverages rose 55% in the week ending March 21, according to Nielsen. Spirits like tequila, gin and pre-mixed cocktails led the way, with sales jumping 75% compared to the same period last year. Wine sales were up 66% while beer sales rose 42%. And online sales far outpaced in-store sales. Nielsen said online alcohol sales were up 243%. Danelle Kosmal, a Nielsen vice president, suspects growth rates peaked that week as people loaded up their pantries before state stay-at-home orders went into effect. Kosmal said data for the week ending March 28 will be a better indicator of ongoing demand.

Briefly, though.
Here in Ohio, liquor stores are not considered essential and are shuttered indefinitely. Can still get beer and wine at a grocery store.

That was one thing I found odd in the US.
When I visited Austin a number of months ago it felt odd that the Whole Foods near my hotel had a couple of aisles of wine and beer basically in the middle of the supermarket. That's doesn't happen in Australia. I'm not sure of the exact legislation but the effect is that all liquor is in a separate store.

Yes - in fact . . .
. . one of my two most visited markets, Super King, remodeled, moving their liquor section into a confined sub-store with only one narrow, carefully guarded entrance, to reduce "shrinkage". Items selected are paid for in that sub-store and tagged as "Approved".
This sub-store is the size of many liquor stores, and has an incredible number of selections that are over US $100 per bottle. I buy the Armenian brandy I use as throat sterilizer there.
My other most visited market also has a vast liquor section with plenty of expensive bottles. Theirs is all in a wall long, glazed cabinet under lock and key.

In Florida, even some Walmarts do that.

Re: Briefly, though.
Here in the UK, off-licences have been designated as essential.
Because they are.
You can't say to people "ha! months of no going out or socialising or none of that shit for YUO!" and then also say "also, no drinking". At least, you can't say that to British people, without consequences.

Well, it is reported that soap, hand sanitizer and alcohol are, in descending order of efficacy, the best prophylactic measures available. Hand washing is all very well, but who wants to wash his mouth out with soap?
