If you use a small switch, which regens the signal, that should eliminate any problem a hub might produce. The 3Com "splitter" device ($149 list) is a wire speed switch and expands one cable to 4 ports (and handles a phone line too).

don't normally think of switches with so few ports. However, now that I think about it, my Linksys cable modem router has a built in 4 port switch.
