No guarantees with vanilla Debian anymore either
My one and only fresh installation of Jessie, bare metal on a plain Jane HP a410n (P4, 2GB), went fine until the first boot. Then systemd hung during fsck with no way out. I ended up having to do it over with Wheezy.
Has anybody tried Ubuntu-Mate?

My last VM was Mint13. Ran and updated fine.

Lack of version upgrades turned me off.
