Mr Poroshenko said: "Can I be absolutely clear with you this is not a fight with Russian-backed separatists, this is a real war with Russia.

"The fact that we captured...Russian regular special forces soldiers [is] strong evidence of that."

'We should be ready'

When asked whether he feared a summer offensive by Russia, Mr Poroshenko said: "I not fear anything [sic]. I believe they are preparing an offensive and I think we should be ready and I think that we do not give them any tiny chance for provocation. That will totally be their responsibility."

Mr Poroshenko added that, despite not trusting Mr Putin, he had no option but to have faith in diplomacy.

He said he feared parts of eastern Ukraine could not be taken away from rebels by military means alone - meaning diplomacy was the only answer.

On Tuesday, Nato's Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called for an end to snap exercises by Russia close to the Ukrainian border, and demanded Russia be "more transparent when it comes to their military activities".

I wonder if Ukraine is going to be Putin's [insert decades long failed military confrontation]...

At least some people/groups are trying to push that meme. Putin is something else. Russia is too poor to be a decent Cold War adversary. I mean, propeller driven strategic bombers based on copies of the B-29 in the 21st Century - really!!?11

Of course, we have a huge amount of trade with China, so having a Cold War with them seems a bit difficult to pull off. We have much less trade with Russia, and Europe is trying to wean itself off of Gazprom's gas but isn't there yet.

Things were much simpler back when we didn't have significant trade between potential adversaries... ;-)

(Who thinks the Ukraine/Putin situation could go on for a very long time, or could end quickly (e.g. if he were voted or forced out of office; or if a settlement is somehow imposed). It's hard to guess.)
