I wasn't able to gain easy access to many chemicals as a kid, so that probably saved me. My older brother having a scare with Drano as an infant probably helped, too.
My grad school adviser occasionally told stories of experiments with explosives as a kid in Australia. He said NI3 was great fun, but that was enough for him.
