My recollection, which I admit may be faulty, is that the complex had a nuclear bomb self-destruct mechanism in case something really bad happened. The hero recognized, almost too late, that setting it off might cause the pathogen to mutate faster and/or spread over a larger area and make it even more deadly. Cheers, Scott.
