New eCS install issues
Ended up having surprise company this weekend, so wasn't able to start messing with eCS until today. The eCS site appears to have a problem with their database so their forums are not working.

Having weird stuff happen on the two systems I'm attempting to install on.

The first system is an AMD 350 system that's all SCSI(2 drives, cdrom and burner) using an Adaptec 3940 - it uses the AIC7870 driver. Had problems booting but finally worked around them by unplugging the burner from the chain and booting from floppy. I did find out that even though I'm not using IDE, I cannot deselect IDE or the install process resets the machine. I'm now waiting on the drive to be formatted to continue the install - so this system seems to be happy now.

The second system is a Thinkpad 1452. It boots up to the desktop fine, but locks up when the eCS intro movie starts(the FLC/FLI Animation window opens, but the movie never starts). I've tried various options for the display(64K, 256, VGA), but no luck getting past the movie.

New I had a few problems with my laptop
but the only remaining one is that my !@#$$ soundcard won't work. Waaaah, I want my mp3s...

That, and I thought eCS was going to come with IBM's new netscape-6 based web browser? I can't find that either...

I had that as well. There's a bundle of almost all sound card drivers on CD3... you should be able to put in the drivers using the Device Driver Install Program in System Setup.

That, and I thought eCS was going to come with IBM's new netscape-6 based web browser? I can't find that either...

No, that's part of the Upgrade Protection plan. Including that in the base system would have upped the price by a substantive chunk of money. SSI managed to swing being able to pass all fixes and device driver updates sans charge to customers, but new software (like the IBM browser) requires them to pay a full SWC fee... which adds somewhere around 50 bucks to the cost of the base system.

New As it turns out, the sound card drivers were working fine
but the default setting on the laptop is "do not make any noise whatsoever". I kept highlighting sounds and trying to play them, and they wouldn't -- until I chose a sound scheme. :P

That was a bit counter-intuitive. All is fine now, though.

eCS is pretty darn cool. That's all I gotta say.

And I recently bought in to the upgrade protection plan, so I should be getting all the goodies, too... muahahahahahahahahaha

New UPP?
What exactly does the Upgrade Protection Plan entail? I'm thinking I should get it, but wasn't sure what it was.

New essentially,
for a year you get access to all the fixes IBM releases for OS/2 and OS/2's java runtimes, new enhancements, the web browser, that kind of stuff. You essentially get all of IBM's goodies without having to buy into their two year cycles.

New Not exactly

Fixes and new drivers are included in the base price. Only new features are in Upgrade Protection. You don't need to buy UP to get fixes and drivers. There is going to be a download area on www.ecomstation.com where you'll be able to get drivers and fixes.

So far, the only thing in UP is the IBM branded browser. However, I know they intend to add more before the end of the year... however, it's not likely that IBM will be sweetening that particular pot. I understand they're trying to swing a deal with a company that's written a Security Enabling System driver, allowing for file level permission controls and multiple desktops. IIUC, since it's based on the SES services kernel interface, it will be reflected automatically in everything that rides on top... so that telnet access can be restricted based on user, for example. However, I've not actually seen the product, so I may not have all the details right...

New Re: eCS install issues

Ok, the deal with the CD boot is probably because the system is not sure just what drive letter your system is assigning to the CD you've got it in. You can find out by booting from the CD, pressing Alt-F1, and selecting S. This will run a little program that will tell you which drive letter it's being assigned in your system. I don't know why you can't boot without IDE; I didn't have that here (scsi disk and CD; CD is too old to be bootable... or there's something hodged with my scsi card in this respect).

If you want to get the ear of the developers, go to [link|news://news.ecomstation.nl/ecomstation.support.install|the eCS support newsgroup]. I'm sure they'd be especially interested in hearing about the movie on the thinkpad...

New Thanks!
The SCSI system installed fine using the floppy method. Still reinstalling everything else though.

I've skimmed the newsgroups a bit and see something in response to somebody else's problem with the desktop hanging(but after the movie) - Kim Chueng says to try "unchecking the 'DeskTop' option of the preboot menu". I'll give that a go tonight.

Know of an "easy" way to move Netscape from c: to d:? I prefer to keep non-OS things on the other drive so I don't lose things like email if I ever reinstall. I tried just moving the Netscape folder, which appeared to work fine except that it "lost" all the plugins.

New No-go on desktop deselect
The movie still pops up and locks up the system :-(

Off to post in the ecomstation forum.
