New former CIA Director calls for Snowden
...to be hanged.
WASHINGTON – Former CIA Director James Woolsey had harsh words Tuesday for anyone thinking about giving Edward Snowden amnesty, and argued the NSA leaker should be “hanged” if he’s ever tried and convicted of treason.

Woolsey, along with former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Hugh Shelton, spoke Tuesday in Washington in an interview with Fox News.

“I think giving him amnesty is idiotic,” Woolsey said. “He should be prosecuted for treason. If convicted by a jury of his peers, he should be hanged by his neck until he is dead."

For my own part, I think that Snowden is easily a hundred times the patriot that Woolsey is, and that in a just world Woolsey and his ilk would occupy Milosevic's old cell block at The Hague.

Question for Another Scott: If the men who wrote the US Constitution, resurrected and brought up to speed on current events, sat in judgment on the two men, which one do you suppose they would regard as more faithful to the model of government-to-governed relations they laid out? If your answer is "Woolsey," I would be fascinated to read your reasoning laid out at any length you might wish. If your answer is that they couldn't possibly appreciate the realities of this century that require the protections they wrote into that document to be eviscerated, why I'd read that with great interest as well.

cordially,
New Quick answer...
The fact that this was on Fox News makes me think that Woolsey and Shelton should be checked for dementia, but...

If Madison were reanimated and asked that, I don't think he could answer. The idea of a permanent military was anathema to him and many others of that day. But he and others of that day had strong opinions about the importance of their "sacred honor" - Burr killed Hamilton in a duel in 1804. People who had a position of trust under the United States (or working to support the same), as Snowden did, would not be held up as heroes (e.g. consider Benedict Arnold in 1779 - http://en.wikipedia....g_to_change_sides ) after giving up secret information.

Snowden won't be executed if he is convicted. The last federal execution was in 2003 - http://en.wikipedia....vilian_executions

Woolsey's just shooting his mouth off.

My $0.02. HTH.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Myself, I think
...that Madison would regard Woolsey as far worse than the worst of George III's ministers. Do we not submit in America today to usurpations of our personal liberties on a scale undreamt of by the despots of that distant century? Regarding "sacred honor," the notion that Madison would be unable to distinguish between fidelity to the principles of the Constitution and the legalese of security boilerplate extorted by an instrument of naked tyranny, as he would certainly have regarded the NSA—well, it is to laugh. I'm a little disappointed,

cordially,
New I'm good at doing that (disappointment) these days. :-/
New they have pills for that :-)

They too are impaled on the Horns-of-a-Dilemma.
(I am told that this is quite uncomfortable if the Dilemma is full-grown.)
