iwethey--++
Today was my first day as the Chief Architect at an automotive finance/credit firm. Fun times ahead, but the commute is a killer: 45 minutes now, where before it was 4.5 minutes from bed to den.
Lots of Java, Oracle, messaging, and so on, and enough of a target rich environment to keep me busy for a while.

Not really finance.
Credit aggregation. Not the evul bank, but a middleman between the evul and the dealers.

Very cool
And my commute is 72 minutes on the train, then 15 minutes of walking.
So be happy.

It's not the length of the commute
I don't mind the drive per se as I'm taking the opportunity to learn a spoken language.
The hours, however, force me to get up very early (for me at least), which time shifts my bedtime (because of my sleep issues) to the point where I don't have a lot of room left in the evening for family or decompression.

I just started really enjoying it
I almost always get a decent seat, with either no or an unobtrusive seat mate.
Got a great pair of noise canceling headphones.
Click, the train disappears.
I've got a great last gen Nexus 7, and I'm about 400 pages into HHGTTG, using an easy interface that I don't need glasses for.
I also love my smoke breaks. 40 floors down, FAST, smart elevators, walk outside, and get a continuous pageantry of NYC on sunny summer day. WOW. It's amazing, and rarely duplicating.
I'm going to buy a decent pair of rollerblades (again), to use to/from the train station in NYC. M will dropoff and pickup locally.
As far as decompress with family, it's perfect. I am in my office, EARLY, 7:30, but I leave guilt free to catch the 5:17 home. I get home 5 minutes before B does, M has already prepared dinner to be waiting before she picks me up at the train station, so it all hits perfectly for the next hour or so.

Thanks all.
Office with nice windows and southern exposure suitable for plants, great coworkers, and even a numbered underground parking space. I've certainly had worse work situations by far.
