In the old days all overseas calls were monitored and taped while algo's listened for tidbits like guns bombs drugs or names. Those conversations were handed to analysts who determined what was worth following up on. We couldnt listen to calls originating in the US so our brit allies obligingly did this for us. All this took place years before 911.
