Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Got it here.
Downloaded and installed the Linux version, grabbed the Windows installer as well though it's not been parked on any boxen yet. German mirror worked well for me.

Cool stuff for the Linux version:
  • The installer is now CLI based -- none of this "you have to log in as root with an X11 session" crap to install the system.
  • Default install is now multi-user rather than single user (this was the old "/net" option).
  • First-time run by a user still brings up a mini install, full-screen, process. There's about 2MB of data to be copied over for local use.
  • The installer has several useful, and (shock!) documented CLI options. --help will show.
  • "Print as PDF" is build in. This saves us for Adobe Acrobat 4.0 licenses (Boycott Adobe! We Freed Dmitry! Repeal the DMCA!)
  • Startup is loads faster than prior versions. Initial startup: ~15 seconds. Startup when data are cached: < 1 second (P-III 600MHz, 5200 RPM SCSI, 384 MB RAM). This is roughly half the time required for the 638 build on the same system.
  • Looks like it's lost some weight. Roughly 51MB for 638, vs. 36MB for 1.0, for a naked session. This is progress.
If I could get over my innate hatred of office suites, I might almost like this.

New Mirrors listed at OO.org
...the site itself was accessbile. Their downloads come from other servers in NY and SF, which should be taking the bulk of traffic (and were nonresponsive when I D/L'd.) I pretty much went through the entire American/EU mirrors list, suspect OZ and Asia are less traffiked. Mirrors list [link|http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/1.0.0/index.html|here].

New Print as PDF
I dl'ed SO 1.0, installed, and there is no Print as PDF option that I can find.

:P

Of course, this is Win2k, so there might be some issue that they couldn't get around...

New Navigation
  • Print (icon or File -> print)
  • Select "Print to file"
  • In the file-selection dialog, select "PDF" in the "File Type" combo box.
That's it.

Got that under Windows?

New Nope.
In the file type selection box, the only option is "all".

New Print as PDF in Win32 Solution err workaround
Well it comes getting a PDF from Windows without Adobe...

it is as simple as having a Linux samba server hanging around.

First, install a generic PS printer nearly any PS printer should work, low or high functionality. Make sure it prints to a file.

Second, make sure you have a mapped drive to a samba server that has GhostScript on it.

Third, print ANY document from ALMOST any application in wondows to the new printer and to the a file on the mapped drive (typically my "Home" Directory I use)

Fourth, SSH to your linux box, locate your file, run ps2pdf included with the ghostscript packages installed on your Linux machine. i.e.:

ps2pdf foo.ps foo.pdf

Give you a straight PDF. Not locked down or anything... so you can modify it if you want to. Or use some of the features in GhostScript to make it read only.

New Gross, dude.
Yeah, I can really see me getting the secretaries to do that.

And can you IMAGINE trying to explain this to a project manager? Can you? :-)

New YEah... Yeah... tis not optimal
But, I don't want to setup a Ghostscript Ripper Deamon on my W2K box... it is just easier for me.

Granted, most secretaries have a tought time printing Long-Edge Duplexing... let alone something like this.

But as they saying goes... there is ALWAYS more than one way to skin a cat.

I am looking into 2 really nasty things right now. One, getting Moz to be the System Shell. Two, Compiling GhostScript on Win2K (by myself not some binaries you D/L) so I can start playing with just the thing to knock on Adobe's niche.

Oh well.

At least there IS a workaround... but tell me, when has ANY workaround been easy??

greg, curley95@attbi.com -- REMEMBER ED CURRY!!!
New Or use Redmon and keep it local
[link|http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/redmon/|Redmon] lets you redirect the printer driver output to a program of your choice.

New Windows version equally impressive
Agree on all points, plus:

  • They got rid of that annoying MDI interface--it's all separate modules, now.

  • The Writer opened a brochure I had written in Word without a single correction needed. Other free suites (ThinkFree, etc) don't even come close on tables and styles. Not to mention that even Word itself couldn't open the document without munging the tables and switching one of the display fonts to Courier!

  • Draw--this is my new migration path to get rid of MS Office; I'm giving it to the Field Team for house plan diagrams, etc. Funny how Writer, Calc, etc, come along with it free of charge. :)

Way to go OpenOffice!

New Thanks for That tip!
Passing this-all along. Could this *finally* begin to pound that stake into the Heart of the M$ cashcow ??

I need no 'office suite' personally, but I guess duty requires that I play with this one - eventually to wean the local non-profit from further truck with Evil.

Please let us know if.. you actually do succeed in replacing Orifice on all / most machines (?)

Gracias,

New It sounds like it might actually be useful now.

That's what annoyed me most about StarOffice when I played with it on OS/2 years ago. It's good to see that that's finally gone.

I notice on the porting page that a MacOS X port is underway, and a couple of fellows are working on an OS/2 port. If Apple has any sense they'll strongly support work on the MacOS port...

I hope the project has some legs. It would be great to get away from having to use MS Office.

<... should I finally get a laptop Mac capable of running OS X?...>

Cheers,
Scott.
New OO on Mac OS
I can't remember where I saw it, unfortunately, but I stumbled across a screenshot of OpenOffice showing Taiwanese fonts running under what looked like OS X. :-) It was only two or three days ago.

New I read about this
They managed a successful build of 638, I believe. It runs on OS X, but only under X Windows.

However, with this start they may be able to come up with a build that runs natively under Aqua. I'm very much looking forward to this, as I've used OO on Linux and it's pretty nice.
