In addition to this, a recently discovered "second brain" exists in the gut (Blakeslee, 1996). This brain is called the enteric nervous system and surrounds the esophagus, stomach and intestines. It is capable of learning and remembering, and is tied only loosely to the brain in our heads. This nervous system is very primitive, and is tied in more closely with the subconscious aspect of our brains. We experience it as "gut feelings." (Japanese businessmen call this haragei, or belly talk.)
