Whatever happened to Linux PDAs ??? - a lot!!!
[link|http://www.linuxdevices.com/articles/AT8728350077.html|Goodies already available and some to come]
Have bought a YOPY (bloody thing has no backlight & whilst it is near perfect otherwise, is downright unuseable because of it (I was pissed off!)).
Am about to buy a Zaurus SL5500 which by all accounts is the best of them all at the moment - has embedded java Interestingly, I can't find an SL5500 in HK but can order one from Amazon, yesterday I had a go only to find that Amazon won't ship these outside US. Damn!!! (Hey Ashton, are u willing to recieve my Amazon pre-paid SL5500 order & forward to me if I send ya the loot for Airmail ???).
Have looked at the AGENDA but here in HK they are giving the few available away for next to nothing - story is they are going out of business.
I just wish SONY would put Linux in its new (announced in March) Clie hand-helds - That big screen & its superior appearance would make it the top of the lot (but despite Sony interest & backroom Linux activity, no sign they will do a Linux version - just PALM OS)
In the Windows CE camp - the HP looks by far the nicest unit - am tempted to get one to compare to the SL-5500.
Cheers

getting a Zaurus
Doug,
I have both a YOPY and a Zaurus....was also pissed about the YOPY backlight issue and talked to the head of engineering over there about it.
If you want a Zaurus: [link|http://developer.sharpsec.com/|link]
Sign up on the site as a developer and you'll be able to buy one directly from Sharp.

Re: getting a Zaurus - bummer!
That's too bad re: export....
Re: YOPY....I've asked them to add both a contrast function as well as the backlight support. If you look at the upper left side of the YOPY there is a button that moves up and down. This is to support contrast.
They do expect to add both functions (contrast/backlight) in the next few months. I'm guessing that a hardware swap might be needed at some point.

Re: Zaurus - apart from backlight issue ...
How does the Zaurus compare - what do you think of the unit ?
Is it a winner - At JavaOne they were selling a 32MB version with a 802.11b card for 299. They were selling like hot cakes (they had 2,500 to sell).
I am guessing that doing this will create a massive surge of interest in Java based PDAs. It is the Java support that really attracts me to the Zaurus.

Re: Zaurus - pros and cons
I like the Zaurus very much and think it compares favorably to the rest of the market. In particular, it has good options for expandability.
The only negatives I found were some driver install problems and some problems with the built-in PIM apps. After installing the drivers and re-booting, the drivers appeared to not be present. Sharp has issued a patch for this. There was no import or export function in the PIM apps. I believe this has been fixed. Also, there was no way to print from the Qt Palmtop Center. I think this was also fixed.
I've been able to write some Java apps for the Zaurus. So far so good. I've not had as much time to work with it yet as I'd like so I'll have to give you more feedback over time.

Sure..
ashton AT vom ddottt com
will do it.
They can send it to me via UPS or USPS as you choose - it being small, no idea which is best. I've sent a scope to HK, so no big deal at local post office, though you'll need to be explicit re what to declare on the green? form thingie.. Natch you'd want via Air; again - it's small.
Ashton who just happened to drop in here to clear an LRPD :-\ufffd

Re: Tks will follow up in a few days - just
bought an iPaq 3870 with 64+64 Ram - 66mhz processor, bluetooth & Windows 2002.
WHAT A CROCK OF SHIT configuring that software is !!! -- I needed to buy the thing as my requires me to be expert on all the PDAs etc: & what they offer.
MSIE on win2002 is pathetic. Setting up network connections using bluetooth is worse (I have a blue tooth phone). The YOPY browser was far better. The writing software is good - perhaps better than PALM but only equal to YOPY.
I am really looking forward to the Zaurus. Also today HK shops started selling the new SONY PDAs - they are so durned chaep & they say the HK & English versions will be cheaper - such a beautifull looking machine + MP3 + a big swvelling screen. The local price is 3280 HK (400 US). This product just needs to be expanded to add more ram (16-64) & a faster processor & Linux (comes with PALM 4.1) - it would push the price up to about 500US but it is a killer device (so light).
Will be in contact re send HK freight costs to you etc:
Cheers & thanks doug (within 1 week)

Sony swivel NR-70 is $500 USD
For more, you can check out sites like PalmInfocenter.com. It's more expensive here (US) than in Asia.
It's currently the fastest PalmOS device (66 MHz 680xx Dragonball). For anything faster than that, you'll have to wait for ARM-based Palm 5 based machines in the fall. Other downsides include low battery life (half that of the T615) and larger size.
The Zaurus is available at Fry's, but it's a little pricey (similar to PocketPC, about $650 IIRC). Next time I'm at Fry's I'll have to look at it in a little more detail.
BTW, you can also run Inferno OS on iPaq's -- I've seen it done at trade shows.
And, I'm very happy with my new Sony T615 (blue). Then again, I only want a PDA, not a singing, dancing, mainframe that finds in my hand.

Re: Sony NR-70 - got Jap one
A very nice & light unit. It is same height as iPAQ 3870, is thinner & lighter & of course has bigger screen. I will get a copy of the English CD but in the meantime you can install the English drivers (sync) for the T615 as they seem to be the same.
Screen is quite readable in neon lighted office.
Now to get that Zaurus to Ashton & compare it.
Cheers
