New Same
Windows morons.

New They've never recovered from the Windows Witch.
Fortunately I can't remember her name right now. I keep thinking Bonnie Grice, but she was the witch destroying KUSC, our local classical music station.

She was hired as program director by Wally Smith, the popular station manager, who then married her. Fortunately KUSC is listener supported (very well supported, I might add) and when the donation forms started coming in with no checks and a message that no money would come until Bonnie went, attention was paid.

Last I heard Wally and Bonnie were managing a 12 watt station at some Midwestern college.

Unfortunately InfoWorld was advertiser supported not reader supported. There were not controls over the firing of all competent staff and replacement with airheads.

Of course once a few Windows based monopolies and near monopolies developed and everyone else was out of business, not much advertising was bought and InfoWorld dwindled to 35 pages - and then retreated to the Web.
New Interesting point in there
If you manage an advertising-supported medium, isn't it in your best interests to have plenty of players with healthy competition? As you point out, an established monopoly doesn't need to advertise.

If anything, I would expect ad-media to exaggerate the competence of second-tier players.

New And that's exactly what InfoWorld (and others) didn't do.
Actually this was the second wave of magazine extinctions. The first was when the IBM PC came out and everyone started promoting it heavily and simply ignoring everything else.

The carnage among magazines was immense as all the other computer and equipment makers died.
