Welcome to IWETHEY!

New I still think singing the multiplication tables and alphabet
is a good idea. Rote learning isnt always very useful but reflexive memory about the basics makes it a little easier when it comes to the upper level things.
New Sure.
I think the more ways information has to get into your brain, the more likely it is to stick and be understood. Music and singing is important as it exercises a different area of the brain than raw thinking and memory. Muscle memory is important, too, so (I think, for me) writing notes is vital for learning in a lecture.

But singing the alphabet by itself can be confusing. I remember being baffled for a long time about what "elemenohpee" was. :-)

Cheers,
Scott.
New Now.. singing the Periodic Chart! ya gots to have a
Tom Lehreresque Mind to do That.

"Papa Haydn's dead and gone
But his mem'ry lingers on
When he was ... {{forget}}
He wrote jolly tunes like this!"

~~ from Teaching Little Fingers to Play -- first piano course.
And the tune remains as well.
Yup, Rote has its assets and afflictions
...

Wanna hear --?
Snapdragons and dandelions are not so very wild
I never yet saw one forget and try to hurt a child ...
OK: thought not.

New When 'last year's iPad' goes for a C-note, I'll buy
-- just for That.
New I absolutely agree
I had to memorize the times table to twelve in grade four. I'm always glad that our teacher made all of us do it.

I'm reminded of the old adage: "There is no royal road to learning." Sometimes you just have to buckle down and get the shit in your head the old-fashioned way.

I could almost see voting for Palin in 2012 on the grounds that this sorry ratfucking excuse for a republic, this savage, smirking, predatory empire deserves her. Bring on the Rapture, motherfuckers!

New I was going to say "me too" ...
Then I realized that's not what your subject line meant.
