Re: Anti-AIX - lot of emotion at the time but...
To some justified.
IBM did get a somewhat justified 'bad rap' as being anti unix. But it was about DEC that the infamous quote was made
"DEC supports UNIX like a rope supports a hanged man ..."
I had started on UNix in 1980 on a Zilog 16-bit box called the s-8000 which ran a ver 7 Unix called ZEUS (Zilog enhanced Unix System) which was Bell ver 7 with the Berkley Enhancements). Later I worked with XENIX when it too was ver 7 based (later SysIII then Sys V).
Even up to 1989 & later many IBMers I then worked with hated Unix - esp the AS/400 folks in Rochester but to know IBM is to understand the Austin Texas plant & the division that loved UNIX & fought for it all the way both within IBM and outside in the open fragmented quarrelsome market. These guys wanted to do big things to make UNIX acceptable in 'real world' commercial environments.
Unfortunately the AT&T inspired UI/OSF split turned most of us then Unix fans into bigots who fought each other over idiot nothings while Bill Gates pushed his people to build NT. NT today provides the unity the Unix market could never achieve. With some hope & luck Linux might achieve some success but as with Unix back then, the same emotional bigotry is likely (already) to scupper any deep & long lasting Linux Success. Factions were & remain Unix & Linux worst enemies. Bill Gates & co only have to play us all off against each other (when we aren't doing it ourselves).
Cheers
