New OH FOR JEEBUS FECKING CRISPUS!
pbuh
And right now, given that the strategy depends not just on defeating the Taliban but on turning things over quickly to plainly unqualified Afghan troops,
these supposedly unqualified troops are exactly the same folks fighting for the taliban, or are ex taliban or will soon become taliban. Stupid Nato fuckers have no clue about where they are or what they are doing there.
thanx,
bill
New Possible game changer
http://www.nytimes.c...4minerals.html?hp

Turns out that Afghanistan may be a serious mineral treasure house, including iron, copper, cobalt, lithium, and others, with reserves well north of the one trillion dollar value mark.

It all gets different when the Make A Buck principle comes into play.
New For the worse probably
Adding vast mineral wealth to Afghanistan is not going to help the situation any. Vast resource wealth in poorly run countries is a recipe for a corruption and violence.

Heck, when you compare similar places like Nigeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Saudi Arabia, it looks like a smart corrupt dictatorship might be the best option.

On the plus side for Afghanistan, most of the wealth doesn't seem to be in materials that can be easily extracted and sold on the black market. Heavy metal mining usually means large, well organized mines, so they can be more easily controlled and guarded by the central power of the country.

New its been there all the time
http://www.bgs.ac.uk...inerals/about.htm
A new epoch in the study of Afghanistan's geology and mineral resources began when the Government of Afghanistan inaugurated the National Geological Survey in July 1955. This marked the initiation of systematic surveys of the geology and mineral resources of the country, which continued over the next 25 years. This period was characterised by extensive mapping operations and, subsequently, by geological surveys and prospecting of mineral occurrences and more detailed evaluation of selected prospects. The Afghanistan Geological Survey under the Ministry of Mines and Industries conducted this work in cooperation with German, Italian, French and Soviet geologists. During the first years of the existence of the Geological Survey some assistance was also received from the United Nations organisation.
its not a new discovery when the mining folks have known about it from halfway thru the last century
New Yeah, found out about that after I saw the article
sounds like it's an attempt to make a sales job on the US people... Afghanistan is a great way for the Right People to mainline directly from your wallet.
New That I could beleive
or the fact that young folk in government dont realize there is not much new out there so are busy rediscovering stuff that all the historians knew about for eons.
