New Texas BOE Throws Thomas Jefferson Down the Memory Hole

Yesterday in Texas, the State Board of Education, packed with Republican creationists and “social conservatives” by Governor Rick Perry, voted to take Texas schoolchildren back into the Dark Ages.

Kids in Texas public schools will no longer be taught about one of the greatest political philosophers in American history, Thomas Jefferson. That’s right. They removed Thomas Jefferson from the curriculum — replacing him with religious right icon John Calvin. There’s no mystery about why they did this, either; Jefferson was one of the strongest advocates among the founding fathers for the separation of church and state, and that’s exactly what these cretins are trying to reverse.

And the removal of Jefferson is not all, not by a long shot. What’s happening in Texas is a genuine outrage; it’s a frightening example of what happens when religious fanatics get into positions of power.

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from."

New Gee thanks
I just lost an hour learning about Calvinism.
What an asshole.

I makes perfect sense that they'd want to promote his views over any others.
New Calvin: one of the earliest totalitarians
and the source of the idea that you can do anything you want and it won't matter for your chances of getting into heaven. Theology tailor-made for sociopaths.
New Yeah I thought that was interesting
But you can't blame him for that particular silliness.

He hated those bastards.

New And it generated a decent conversation with the kid
So it was worth it.
New You know Calvin and Hobbes was inspired by him, no? :-)

Cheers,
Scott.
New No
It makes a bit more sense now.
New Could backfire
A fine line between promoting and exposing.

Still, dropping TJ from American history? What's next, dropping nouns from English class?

Why, yes, I did give up something for lent. I gave up making sense.
New ebonics
If we torture the data long enough, it will confess. (Ronald Coase, Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences, 1991)
