He's a very smart, and seemingly unflappable lawyer who wrote some legal opinions for the Bush Administration that provided a fig-leaf of cover for what they wanted to do: torture, the "Unitary Executive", etc., that threw out over 200 years of understanding of US law.

Many regard him as an evil man who enabled war crimes to be committed.
