annals of medicine, con't
The elderly father-in-law, he who ignored the suppurating sore on his Achilles tendon, has been enduring much these past weeks. The original amputation below the knee did not deter the aggressive staph infection; nor did a subsequent trim of the leg to just short of the knee. The doctors have now concluded that what we're dealing with is the dreaded "flesh-eating bacteria" (apparently a painful way to die), and the f-i-l has just endured his third or fourth operation in ten days, this time severing the leg not far south of the crotch. His daughter, my wife, has been in the southland for most of this month holding things together. "I'm the right tool for the job," she said in a phone conversation this afternoon, "but I've got to warn you that once this is over I'm going to collapse."

Resist the I-told-you-so urge
I know you know that, but I also know how much parents can make you want to scream it at them sometimes. I think it's because they're supposed to be the responsible ones. We shouldn't have to tell them to take care of themselves, and it's really jarring when we find ourselves having to do that.
Hoping for the best.

That which can be crossed, is.
I've been where you are.
It's about as much fun as installing Windows 95, but without the dizzying highs.
You know where I am if you need to vent.

sending a prayer your way
"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from."
