Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Mozilla .9.8 Build 2002020406
First few days' review:

"Install stub" (sep. download from main) wasn't versatile enough to allow completing install via (friend's CD with the download). Could only expect a web download for next step.

Unzipped and ran (I forget the 'local install' .exe name!). EZ and impressive: I use bookmarks for a dbase, kinda and it's >1 mb. Ditto many e-mail folders. It correctly converted that all, flawlessly = both the ugly-4.5 and Moz. coexist for use. Mostly - correctly kept previous setup info; only minor tweaking needed.

The multiple mail option made simple, the use of both ISPs (next I can drop the wannabe-monopoly Earthlink, who gobbled up my small ISP - for my local guys Rob & Ron - who be sharp and.. available). No talking to someone in Sri Lanka for problem fixes. EZ enough even to reselect the SMTP server for either one. Yeah - Eudora prolly eventually, but WTF - it works adequately.. I like 'adequate'.

Minor glitches - occasionally doesn't want to Minimize! but stay at intermediate size. And as right here - sometimes a <-- or --> cursor move gets a surprising new location. (Buffer overrun !?) Can live with both.

Haven't tried out jscript ON much; usually don't - but it's gotta have more bells&whistles than the brain-dead 4.5 version. The built-in management for filing b/marks seems versatile enough, when I get a round tuit.

There's a lot of Stuff there, though - in two places; sure hope it continues to find all its guts. The Help files seem intelligently edited, on cursory glance; much less condescending [and way less stupid] than the McSoft style.. I didn't opt for the 'Quick Start' thingie - but it loads ~speed to the smaller 4.5 anyway.

So.. thanks, Alex for the (final) prod - and Peter? for earlier reminding - what a POS 4.5 was :(

finally past a 4.x release of something! Conservative by nature, I guess...
New About those bookmarks....
If you figure out how to keep that "versatile enough" system from sorting the bookmarks, would you let me know? For some types of research, I like to go through my bookmarks in a given order and it's an unnecessary pain in my ass having to look for them by name, rather than going down an unsorted list. For now, most of that research is for work, which means I am running Windows, and while I hate to say it, IE does it right. (blush)

I'd love to switch, if for no other reason than to escape the icky feeling of using more MS stuff than absolutely necessary, but I want the replacement to do what I want...

eow (end of whining)

New Re: About those bookmarks....
You can arrange the bookmarks using Manage Bookmarks (or Ctrl-B) and move them around to your liking. It's a drag and drop kind of thing. Look for a line marker for where the dropped item will go.

That works for me.

New Bookmark Manager
Sounds like a need for that bookmark manager program that I was thinking about. Import all your bookmarks into it, categorize them, sort them how you want. Assign a browser to them if you wish. Then launch the browser from the bookmark browser program. It also could copy Bookmark URLs to the clipboard.

New Been done: "CBM"

Have it; only briefly tried it, some time ago - it (then) purported to convert IE-->NS and vice versa; that was not my problem, however. But it seemed to work at organizing - it was only I who "didn't work" at achieving that :(

Files are dated 7/99.. so I have no idea how/if it would work with the likes of Mozilla now. Haven't bothered to see if an upgrade exists.

If I run into Drew's noted anomaly - maybe I'll look further. Right now - good intentions do not an 'organization' accomplish..

New Main complaint I've had
The only complaint I've had with 0.98 (and previous versions) is the wretched focus control. Even when a page I bring up doesn't have frames, more often than not I have to click inside the page in order to begin scrolling down the page with Page Down or Page Up.

New Noticed that.
Didn't realize it had a name - 'focus'?

I'd report the oddity of it sometimes being unable to Minimize, if I could reproduce the phenom.. just telling them "it sometimes does this" - what good is that?

Anyway.. so long as no serious deficiencies show up; nothing IS perfect which has to run on a concrete base largely diluted with sand and BS.

So far.. no crash taking Windoze with it (more likely: Windoze crash taking More than just Moz. with it). Only crash I can recall was when screwing with jscript - which I note STILL doesn't access Some of the lazy-outs of those sites which use js to get enlarged images. No crash but - no workee either; this where the box clearly shows an unheeded java command..

{sigh} M$ has achieved one main goal - to make web-programming so complex that, the lazy ones WILL turn out crap. Imagine! - tryin to make something work on JUST IE 5, 5.5, 6.x, let alone the Other ones (I can't - but I bet you can).
