Not a great week.
Last weekend, my wife and I, and Erik my youngest, visited Alice, my oldest daughter.
She's 24, married, has a fantastic little boy, and lives in Davenport, Iowa. About 4 hours drive from Milwaukee, where I am. She just started teaching math to middle school kids. We've never been to her new place.
We had a very nice weekend. On Sunday, she was a little tired.
Monday, she went to the emergency room with a really bad case of female troubles. My wife went back to Iowa to be with her.
Wednesday, she was diagnosed with leukemia.
She's on chemo.

More thoughts..
Oddly, heard yesterday from neighbor about a relative ~ 19 when diagnosed. Bone-marrow, the whole drill. He's ~42 now, with no apparent recurrence. Think ++ *Everything* is anecdotal.

Well, this is not real good.
Is 24 young enough to have a good cure rate? I think it is.
Chemo, though, is not going to be at all fun. I really hope it all comes out OK, and considering the state of "modern medicine" that's always iffy.
My best hopes and wishes go out to her.

It may well be
I just got home from visiting her - that's why I'm up so late.
The lab hasn't analyzed it yet, but her cerebro-spinal fluid sample is crystal clear visually, so maybe no cancer in the central nervous system.
Dr. estimates the mutation occurred 2-3 months ago.
Things are looking pretty good.
Her blood is currently almost zero on red cells, white cells, and platelets. She basically has drugs and saltwater in her veins. That's by design - the disease replaced the red cells and platelets with useless immature white cells and the chemo took those out. Scary stuff. No immune system to speak of.
Oh, yeah - her Jehovahs Witless mother-in-law is objecting to transfusions. Fortunately her opinion is not binding. You know, there was a time when religious tolerance was one of my core values...
