Machine update
I managed to convince the 3ware controller to bring the mirror up degraded (aside: what's the point of a RAID controller that won't function when one of the drives in a mirror is bad...?).
That's the good news.
The bad news is that I can't mount the data partition, of course:
attempt to access beyond end of device
io error in filesystem meta-daa dev dm-5 block xfs_read_buf error 5
XFS: size check 2 failed
So I'm trying to get past that right now.

also can you dd the data partition to something you can mount?
thanx,

Re: no fsck recovery working?
Yeah, I found the first. The Ubuntu Live CD doesn't have xfs_repair on it, but I managed to get a copy over there and was about to try it.
How would I go about with the dd?

generic dd
say umountable partition is on /dev/hd0 and you know the patition slice is 2
so dd if=/dev/hd0s2 of=/mountablePartition/placeholder

Re: generic dd
He has bigger issues to fry ...
He needs to get a usable partition with enough space... then he can make a dd image of the partition remember, he boots from this set of drives.
Also, scott, did you install the 3ware 3dd (3ware disk daemon) last time?
As you can set it up to e-mail you on problems. I used that but ignoring e-mails wouldn't do you any good either.
You might want to make a special account or something and rules base the recipient in google mail.

I was getting emails.
The first email I got was right as the machine went down. For some reason the card won't run in degraded mode. The only way to get the controller to even present the drives as devices is to remove the bad one completely. And yes, I had a gmail rule to flag them.

Great, didn't mean to
sound like you were.
I get enough e-mails in a day to swamp even the biggest info maniac/whore.
I ignore e-mails. It bites me from time to time.

way I do it
no subfolders except for ietf mailing lists
If mail makes it to place 50 in the inbox and the original sender has not followed up looking for a response it probably wasnt that important.
thanx,

Pshaw, that's the girly way
Delete everything.
If it's *that* important, they'll follow up with a phone call.
Harsh but fair.
