New Opposition for its own sake
"The duty of the opposition is to oppose." True enough, in a quasi-tautological way, but it begs the question. Just what is the point of political opposition?

In a free market system, consumers have choices. In a well functioning democracy, voters have choices. The point of choices is this: if one vendor's product isn't doing the job as well as you'd like, you switch vendors. If the old vendor doesn't like this, he'd better get his act together and start competing. Partisanship among voters is simply brand loyalty in the political realm, and every bit as stupid. Competition makes the free market work. Competition makes democracy work.

Except when we substitute opposition for competition.

In politics, the product is government. That means upholding the law, and securing citizens' rights and liberties against all enemies, foreign and domestic. The parties can best justify their existence by competing to do this better. But they're not. And that's the problem.

On September 11, 2001, an event occurred which woke half of our country out of its complacency, and pushed the other half into desperate denial and conspiracy theory mongering. Happily, the party in power catered to those who wanted to face reality and deal with the problem. George W. Bush may have his faults, but he's not so low as to let Islamist terror rule the world by default.

The Democrats had two choices at this point: compete or oppose. They chose to oppose. That means take the opposite position, automatically, regardless of merit, and then try to come up with a justification for it. They've been doing this for six years now.

(Well, not all of them. After the November 2006 elections, enough sane Democrats came into power that the immediate Iraq withdrawal the Left had hoped for never happened. But I'm speaking collectively, not categorically.)

This was a stupid, unthinking choice. Did it ever occur to them to concede that previous approaches to dealing with terror simply weren't working, and a more tough minded approach was clearly called for? No. Their first, last and only thought was to oppose, and try to put the government out. This is the most criminal failure of moral imagination our country has seen since the politicians cut and ran from southeast Asia. Maybe even the worst since the abandonment of Reconstruction.

The out party having decided not even to try to compete, it would make no effort to come up with any constructive criticism, nor to outdo the in party in dealing with the Islamist problem. Instead, they opposed, the only way they could - by denying the problem and trying to change the subject. Here the Left was useful in showing them how to do it. But it never occurred to them to ask *whether* to do it.

And now they've got a problem. Opposition has been losing traction lately. The surge shows signs of real progress, the Petraeus report backs it up, and what can the Democrats do? They're irrevocably committed to opposition - not by principle, or by circumstances, but by their own inability to conceive of any alternative. Lately, they're getting desperate. They attack the surge before it begins. They attack Petraeus with increasing shrillness. Their Leftist friends blunder by slamming Petraeus even *before* he's made his report, with an unhinged full page ad in the New York Times. The Democrats are visibly embarrassed by this, but they can't distance themselves from these freaks. They don't know how.

If there's anything to be learned from the Republican scandals of 2005-2006, and from the ongoing Shamnesty battle, it's that we need competition. Instead, what we've got is opposition. I see a major upheaval coming in our two party system. I doubt if either major party will survive in its current form. They're both awfully low on political capital.

The duty of the opposition is to oppose. But the duty of the out party is to compete. Our enemies provide opposition enough.

Oh, and about that phrase: "loyal opposition." What exactly is a loyal opposition, anyway? Anyone know? I know what friendly competition is, but I've never seen anything I could describe as a loyal opposition. Unless they're loyal to our enemies.

New Why are you doing this?
I wonder why you write this stuff. You think we've forgotten how the Republican Congress just plain opposed Clinton? That we're scared of some Islamists who can't even overthrow their own governments? That invading Iraq had anything to do with suppressing terrorism? Of course not.

You've seen enough previous posts to know this won't fly here. So why bother? My hypothesis is that you're sounding out the counter-arguments so you can devise a counter to those if they're used elsewhere. This explains the usual post-and-run behaviour.

Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?
- Mark Renton, Trainspotting.
New Besides which
an effective opposition that is able to replace the sitting government is a necessity for a modern representative democracy to be able to be considered as such.

Marlowe is anti-democratic.
New You throw lots of colorful words around, as usual.
But also, as usual, you provide few (in this case - no) specifics to try to prove your case. It's a poor effort for you, IMHO.

If you want to engage in conversation on these issues, you might talk more about one of the several topics you discuss. For instance, it appears that the vote on the [link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authorization_for_Use_of_Military_Force|AUMF] vote was 420:1 in the House, and 98:0 in the Senate. It's hard to square that with your claim the "... Democrats ... chose to oppose." Perhaps you can enlighten me on how you see it differently.

Not that I expect you to do so - it's been years since you engaged in actual debate here (rather than apparently trying to drive traffic to your various blogs)....

Cheers,
Scott.
New I remember that vote, and I remember the rhetoric.
They didn't dare oppose him openly at that moment in time. That very, very brief moment in time. But as soon as the polls blew over...

New Oh, so brief? Izzat why they STILL aren't defunding his war?
New Competition does not work in a free market.
In a free market one entity will eventually gain the ability to crush the very possibility of competition. Witness AT&T in the past and Microsoft today. Monopoly requires opposition and "non-free" controls to return competition to the marketplace.

The same in democracy. A party in power can perpetuate that power by control of the purse strings. Competition cannot be reestablished without opposition - this is more true today than it ever has been.

In the case of the Bush administration "competition" is an absurd concept anyway. It would mean providing an alternate vehicle with which to travel a road that is just plain WRONG! Only opposition makes any sense at all here.

Marlowe, the drivel you're spouting today makes far less sense than even your usual drivel. Perhaps you should request a BIOS upgrade and a re-boot.

In his private discussions with British Defence Secretary Des Browne and with the prime minister, Gen Petraeus will be setting out the rationale behind current US thinking.

But it would be surprising if he did not stress the US view of the need for a continuing UK troop presence on the ground.

This is not just a matter of appearances, though being deserted by its leading ally would have severe political repercussions in Washington.

It is also a matter of practical strategy as well. If the British go, then the US will have to find units from its own over-stretched military to bolster security in the south.

Those supply routes to Kuwait are vital for the Americans too and they also provide the best exit route for any eventual US withdrawal.

Brown is going to be under a lot of pressure to stay... It may be easier for you folks to leave if [link|http://tpmelectioncentral.com/2007/09/_source_republican_senators_eyeing_support_for_webb_troop_measure.php|more Republicans desert Bush], but that still seems to be a battle at this point.

Cheers,
Scott.
New There's an election coming...
...and we want our troops home.

It'll be interesting to see how Brown balances that against your good point.
