Adoption of the Old Testament is lamentable but it was probably the most coherent thing they could get hold of - having been periodically organized, revised and republished to support the political ambitions of particular rulers. Because Christianity is a guilt and faith cult, it turns out there is an advantage in having impossible standards, contradictions in doctrine and inexplicable stories in the hold book. People have to constantly work at their faith and regularly feel guilty for failing. But they are trained to respond to such feelings by working harder at double think, obeying the church and donating more. Jay
Post #287,106 by Seamus 6/16/07 4:18:34 PM Reply	IMO it is not really a sub-cult It borrows lots of elements from different religions, definitely the mystery religions, but it was able to mask those elements, over time, so well that it is hard to say that it really is a sub-cult of anything. The intellectual endeavors of finding consistency between the OT and the NT is a big part of its success. So losing the link doesn't seem like a possibility. Seamus
