Looking for Exchange compatible open source email clients.
Non imap, non pop3. Needs to support exchange calendaring. Any pointers?

Evolution oes what I need it to for Linux. I'm not 100% sure how well the calendaring integrates with Exchange because I don't use that portion of it, but you might look into it further...
I know that Evolution at least talks email with Exchange via the evolution-exchange plugin package.

I think you may be looking for quite a while
as I don't think one exists.
OpenOffice is working on a groupware client. Don't think it works with Exchange though.

It seems Evolution fits the bill
From what I've been able to tell from the [link|http://www.novell.com/products/desktop/features/evolution.html|specs], it meets our minimum requirements.
/threadjack We are a major multinational and the fact we are even considering a replacement for Outlook tells me a sea change is coming. We are also looking at Open Office/Star Office. Linux on the server side has been an accepted answer in many spots. I have a feeling someone big has gotten pissed enough at Microsoft to push this through if it's feasible at all. The ongoing DST patch fiasco is bad enough (it is still causing breakage). Combine that with Vista being the train wreck it appears to be shaping up towards and I think we have a real chance of the parent corp moving away from Microsoft where they can.

OpenOffice migration.
We went partly OpenOffice about a year ago, but we had to do it in a less than optimal way: quickly. Bascially we were way over our MS Office license count and those with the purse strings would not spring to get us compliant. So IT got to inflict OpenOffice upon the company. And I use the word 'inflict' quite deliberately: we had no opportunities for user-training or even a staged rollout. It was, in the end, a good example of how not to do it.
Many people still use OpenOffice. But most of the squeaky wheels eventually got proper licensed copies of MS Office. For many of them, it was a case of that's what they were familiar with and would complain if IT took them out of their comfort zone. OpenOffice is still regarded as what to install if we can't 'afford' an MS Office license for someone. :-/

Our company has a "our dime, your time" policy.
We provide training materials which can be used off the clock. I don't remember seeing any courses on any OSS in our curriculum though.

Well, some of them, anyway. There's probably a number who read the docs we create, but there is a noisy contingent who won't.

Our's are "requested" to complete at least two a year.
The yearly reviews have a default section on training completed. To their credit, the honchos who came up with this also have a pretty generous tuition reimbursement, along with a quite decent selection of online coursework. The big lack is hands-on training on the company supplied productivity software. They train the hell out of the sales staff on the stuff we sell, but the software used to support that effort is mostly a sink or swim proposition.
