ATM was supposed to take care of the screen-display issues. My recollection was that MS didn't want to pay for ATM and/or Display Postscript and wanted to use their monopoly to crush Adobe. Apple had some issues with Adobe as well. There may have been font licensing cost issues too.

But I'm unable to check for links at the moment, and could well be misremembering...

There might have been business/nefarious reasons, but ATM's utter crapitude was the principle driver, I wot.
