Welcome to IWETHEY!

New I wish they'd followed up on that
When he talked about how they were more interested in how to use the printing subsystem to force people onto Windows, what did he come up with? What did they spend time and money working on that was not in the interest of creating a better system, but creating better lock-in?

New Me too.
In the older article I read, IIRC, part of the impetus of TrueType was from fixing the Windows' printing subsystem.

New Naw.
TrueType was invented by Apple, not MS.

The impetus for using TT was because PS fonts looked shit on screen. That's shit, with a capital shit.

New I thought there was much more to it than that.
ATM was supposed to take care of the screen-display issues. My recollection was that MS didn't want to pay for ATM and/or Display Postscript and wanted to use their monopoly to crush Adobe. Apple had some issues with Adobe as well. There may have been font licensing cost issues too.

But I'm unable to check for links at the moment, and could well be misremembering...

Cheers,
Scott.
New There was.
ATM was shit.

Hence the problem.

There might have been business/nefarious reasons, but ATM's utter crapitude was the principle driver, I wot.

New Oh yeah - so it was.
My bad. Dunno how I could misremember that... :-?

That means I don't remember the Big Clever thing that happened to the Windows print subsystem. It might have been a real programmer-y thing like actually create some decent and functional abstraction in the API stack.
