I'm checking out..
..of my place of business. I will attend until I find another job, but that's all.
Yesterday I was told my review 'rating'. It's bullshit. A '2'. I am a liability to the company, eh? Don't deserve a bonus? Even though I got awards this past year? Fulfilled ALL of my so-called 'goals and objectives'? Learned new technologies on my own while improving the AS400 environment? Put in crazy overtime to make non-realistic schedules come out on time? Hell, I called in on vacation, worked from home, volunteered for special projects, and did it all successfully with a smile.
This was a punch in the stomach. An insult.
I start looking for work NOW.
I will NOT give notice when I find something.
The 'man' responsible (and I'm not the only one insulted like this) has employee retention as one of HIS goal and objectives. And I am pretty sure that he's going to lose at least 1/4 of his department.
I have EVERY intention of hanging EVERY reason I'm leaving on his neck, too.
And they need me. My contract rates for them will be $200/hour, minimum 8 hours per day.

:-(
That's sick. Unfortunately, there are far too many managers like that.
Is there any way you can go over his head?
Best of luck with the search!
Cheers, Scott.

Write a rebuttal now. Make sure to mention everything here.
Make sure it goes in the file with his signature.
While it may do nothing more than force HR into a more balanced position when you quit, it may also wake up some folks who know that you are important to them.
You are in the rare position of truly not being replaceable on a 1 to 1 basis cause of your platform knowledge.

Agree.
Put the stuff in writing. Paper trails, even by "disgruntled" employees (you know that's how you're going to be characterized, don't you?) do get read and noticed, and must be kept.

Good plan.
But I'll have to get over my 'mad' first.
It's amazing how little the giant bender I went on last night helped.

rebuttals don't do squat
As I was told by a past manager at a former employer, you can write a rebuttal worthy of a Pulitzer Prize, and the odds of anybody reading it are slim; the odds of anybody acting upon what you write are even lower. You're allowed to write a rebuttal as a "feel good" measure. It will go into your file in the HR database, and that will be the end of it.
Only once have I ever heard of someone challenging anything in a review via rebuttal and getting it adjusted. NOTE: it was NOT reversed. And that is one person out of the hundreds that I've known in all the years of my career.
I applaud you taking the attitude that you'll leave giving them no advance notice. Like they'll give you notice that they're not renewing your contract, or that you'll be laid off in 2 weeks, or ..., well, you get the picture.

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from." -- E.L. Doctorow

Same thing happened to me at big river
Some bosses just ought to be horsewhipped. Most co's have no process for dealing with crummy/evil manager - their processes all assume higher on totem pole is always right. The exception might be sexual harrassment policy.

Over the years -
I've been led to the conclusion that, the Suited-ignorance of the entire nature of IT work is so vast -- that your story appears to be ... Average for the course?
If so - this IS insane; though considering the general presence of that I-word on so many levels, last few years: maybe it is 'just average' eh? :-/
Recommendation (!?) - try for as many double entendres in your 'reasons for abrupt departure'
 &^$#$(#, followed by &^$%%&U&
 not to mention, (*$&*&
 finally: $*^#%^*%@^*%@# !!
..as prove fun to sketch out. The pen Remains mightier than the sword.

Funny you say 'suited'
I've started a 'shit-storm' at the office by NOT coming into work in a polo shirt and khakis - but instead by wearing nice shirts, pants, and ties. Just bought a couple of sharp new suits; gonna wear one on Thursday and take a long lunch.
MANY are doing the same.
I've spread the word that if you wear those clothes all the time, no-one will know when or if you are actually interviewing. The many other abused ones like the idea.
As the general wardrobe in the company rises, the number of management meetings, 'focus groups' on 'improving the company', and long meetings in the boardroom has risen dramatically. The CEO has publicly said that reducing turnover was a goal, and I KNOW this has gotten a couple of directors in trouble.
Not sure whether any of this will help those left behind. If it does, great. If it doesn't, it still amuses me mightily.

Why, thanks!
I have a feeling his response to this would probably end up nastier and more effective, though.

One of the directors
as an aside yesterday told me I was "freaking people out". I just looked at him for a second and said "Good!".
This was in front of the CEO. He smiled.
