Welcome to IWETHEY!

New OK, here's my first stab at it. (96K img)
Note that I've modified the HTML file in order to obtain its stylesheet locally.

Downloadable HTML and CSS file [link|http://homepage.ntlworld.com/peter.whysall1/zCSS.tar.bz2|here] (3K).

It looks like this:

Excuse: it was late.

Graphical previews of HTML files? On the World Wide Web?

What an utter pillock. Apologies if I disrupted your idiot-fields.

New Colour Contrast Analyser doesn't like some of it.
[link|http://juicystudio.com/article/colour-contrast-analyser-firefox-extension.php|Colour Contrast Analyser]. It flags the pale blue on black and dim white on black as being something to avoid. It is a little hard to read.

Just something to think about.

Cheers,
Scott.
New I was struggling with the anchor colour.
Suggestions welcome - it seems difficult to select a colour that still looks hyperlinky but isn't #0000FF

New Maybe just keep the achors white, with underlines.
The [link|http://www.w3.org/TR/AERT#color|AERT] discussion at W3C seems to use the same color for anchors as for headings, but with underlining of the links. Also, when you mouse-over the links, the background color changes (similar things happen at LinuxToday).

I'd suggest just sticking with white text (or some other high-contrast color) and doing things like the AERT document does.

HTH.

Cheers,
Scott.
New I played around with Vischeck some.
[link|http://vischeck.homeip.net/uploads/11675819754039/|This] combination of colors seems easier to read to me. It's the Tritanope simulation of your example.

HTH.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Another dark theme to consider is Bloomberg's
E.g. [link|http://www.bloomberg.com/news/worldwide/|World News].

The contrast is pretty good, but I still think I like their previous style (that didn't have a black background) better. A problem with this style is clicking on a link gives a news story with black text on a white background. If it's good enough for that, why not for the main page?

HTH a bit.

Cheers,
Scott.
(Who still thinks a black background is generally too reminiscent of the 1995 Web.)
New I like it. Much!
Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.
New Question -- will this be an optional change?
Is IWT is really going to change colors and have a black background, or is this an option that will be offered to us IWTheyers.

The black background is a little hard on my eyes, so I was just wondering if this is a planned change.

New I did read it, Peter
I just didn't quite grasp if it was something in the works or something being suggested. Thanks for clearing it up. :)

So now I'm getting that it would be something IWTheyers could select and choose as their background, right? Something along the lines of the optional skins with Opera and Windows, only with this? Do I have it right now?

New "it looks like crap" is "constructive"?
No.

It isn't.

In this context, that makes it a waste of bandwidth.

New 'hard on eyes' ???
Methinks prec\ufffdsam\ufffdnte versa vice.

Think about...
all that reflected WHITE with teensy black letters - which we have 'read', all along, before there was any alternative. Then think about the natural settings,
the Earthscape Before ...
meddlesome techno interpreted every change as: improvement.

Yes, we can.. sorta ~accustom to anything - like cubicles, traffic noise, visual-reading noise. But the retina despises us for doing so. (IMhO)

(I always reset backgrounds for pastels, as PURE WHITE on any illuminated screen is the Worst of all possible worlds.) For ex. - this composition space is bluish; any other shade one fancies would do - but greys in this use are more akin to why neutral sunglasses are grey: they do not alter the eye's (remembered) apparent color balance, when switching focus to some included image.

ie I demur.
Peter is actually doing something constructive.. whereas I have been lazy about eliminating the remaining too-much-WHITE space. Even here. Where Giants roam the six-dementia save-face space. [a complex mathematical expression - don't think about it.]

Get thee to a nunnery, Brenda! (or have a small conversation with your retinal gluons)

You don't Have to agree with me on this; but if you know what's good for you . . .

New For me, yes
Get thee to a nunnery, Brenda! (or have a small conversation with your retinal gluons)

You don't Have to agree with me on this; but if you know what's good for you . . .

I've talked to my optometrist a lot about this, and darker background screens with pastel text colors tend to give me a headache. We didn't know if it was from eye-strain, or just the color, but it almost always happens. The only exception was the DOS mode, where large bright letters were on black, but that was all and I only edited in VI there, I didn't read.

He also thought it might be in part to the fact that I often sit online into the wee hours with most of the room dark and then the only bright area is the computer screen, so having the computer screen dark is hard at those times. And even in the daytime, I rarely have the blinds open (one, my bird is loose most of the time), so it's dim in here other than artificial lighting.

I like the shades of light grey and pastel cool colors like blues, greens, purples, etc., with black on that for the most part. Bright yellow backgrounds make me want to run screaming from the room, as do orange and reds.I've coped with some of the garish color schemes chosen by others in Yahoo groups, but I can only do it for a short time, so none othe ones I actually run are color schemed like that.

But I think it's a great idea to have the option available for others, and I agree that Peter is doing something really constructive for IWT. :)

New Forgot to add
I also have a lamp aimed at the keyboard and a floor lamp above my desk, but those are the only lights I leave on in here at night when I'm online for the most part, unless I'm working on something offline as well then both floor lamps are on.

But I just tend to have trouble with the darker backgrounds, so I steer away from them and go with a dark color or black on a pastel background, but not always white.

Edit: I forgot, I also used to be fine with those odd dark green backgrounds commonly used in cathode ray tubes. Those never bothered me.

And yeah, my eyes have had problems for years, I've worn glasses since gradeschool, and I don't do contacts.

New Here's how we could implement it.
New preference: "user stylesheet", with a linky to the original Z one for people to take a copy of and customise.

Check box, put URL for custom stylesheet, apply when ready.

Even better would be the ability for a user to upload their own stylesheet; make a limit of, say, 1KB max to avoid people gaming it by creating multiple users and then doing some kind of weird chimaeran HTTP-with-basic-auth RAIZIWTUA thing to store monkey porn a la Google Mail.
